Leaking tubes
Ok I read all the posts past about fixing leaking push rod tubes. Who ever it was that said you can get the tubes out with the engine in must not have had exhaust on. Drives side aft intake tube don't come out no matter how you hold your tongue.
Anyway I am batting about 75 percent no leaks. However the ones that do leak can sure smoke up a garage while dumping onto hot heat exchangers. I have done the new O-rings clean as a whistle everything. just oil, about half leak, half don't. Tried the Silicone method everthing dry followed the directions. This is where I get 75% success. Maybe I should have built that engine stand in the back yard and ran this mutha till the nieghbors call the cops. Laying on my back under this car is not my ideal sunny afternoon. |

After I replaced mine they too leaked. Until I pulled out on the tube just a little. It seems that they do not like being pushed all the way in...makes no sense to me. I used Viton seals but I guess they do not seat totally. Try pulling the tube out a hair and let us know.

yup did that too
As I put them in I did that very thing. Someone in one of the old threads mentioned it. May have been you. Sounded good to me. At least the valve covers quit leaking. Does sealant come in a caulking gun size? GO BIG OR KEEP IT IN THE GARAGE.

You could ask the guys on Shoptalk Forums...they may have a better answer. If you do get a good answer please post it back here for posterity!!!

I managed to get all 8 of my tubes out with the stock exhaust in place (74/1.8); maybe small variances in each car make a big difference? I think I still have one that leaks, though... I'll have to try that trick where you pull it out a bit, but I just wonder what keeps it from vibrating back down to the bottom again?

I use a high temp synthetic grease on the seals such as Amsoil 2000 which will not run when it gets hot. I goop it on very liberaly and that works well. I started using it on the oring seals of our 1987 930 since it was not quite stock the orings would get destroyed in about 6 months or so and now they last a couple of years. Make sure there is no sealer in the holes where the tubes go and put some grease in there too. Make sure the lands where the oring goes is straight and the tube is round. When you bottom the tube in the hole it should fit snug and not move much at all. Any excess grease will get absorbed into the oil and cause no problems. Good luck.

Think I fixed it
At least got to drive all over today without impersonating a mosquito truck. No leaks So now we will see how long it will last.
I got some of that "White teflon pipe joint compound" From Home Depot. So let me run a few tanks of gas through my teener and will post an update. Later. Now maybe the 928 can get some maintenance time. ![]() |
