Question Mittelmotor or Triad Muffler

Can someone please post picture(s) of the Mittelmotor or Triad mufflers on their 914. Have narrowed it down to these two mufflers, but want to see what it really look like on the car. The Bursch system just doesn't do it for me anymore (look wise). From the rear, with the rust, it just looks NASTY!

Thanks.

I have been running a Mittlemotor exhaut for a couple of months now. I don't have any pictures, but I can try to describe the fit. If you look at the Mittlemotor site picture you can see that it is a large tube with two pairs of pipes with flanges. These pipes connect to the heat exchangers and curve upward into the bottom of the main muffler tube. This places the main tube completely out of sight behind the rear bumper and valance. The final exhaust pipe exits from the end of the main tube and turns to exit the rear valance exhaust cutout (left side when looking at the rear of the car). From the rear of the car, with the valance in place, you see only the mounting flanges to the heat exchanger with the two pair of pipes which curve upward and the exhaust tail pipe exiting the valance. The quality of construction appears to be very high. The stainless steel seems to be heavy gauge and the workmanship and welding is very good. It is quite a bit heavier than the Bursch quiet I removed. Fit was excellent. The exhaust tail pipe is centered in the valance opening. I did not have to loosen the heat exchangers at the heads to bolt it up. I don't think you would be disappointed in the quality.

Phil, thanks for the link, but I was hoping to see one on an actual 914.

Thanks Mike, for the info. Just a few additional questions:

1. Does the exhaust pipe sits below the rear valance you need a valance with a hole...similar to the Bursch setup.

2. What is the best way to order this unit? and cost with shipping to Virginia...do you know?

When I was considering the TRIAD exhaust, the late David Said (of TRIAD fame) sent me these pics of a 914 he had up on his rack performing an install:

After seeing what it looked like installed, I ordered the muffler the next day, based solely on his assurances; "You're gonna like the way it sounds. A low, 911-ish sound."

I hadn't installed it yet when a little more than a month later David Said passed away, and now
Dave Ellison has taken over. After I finally turned the key and heard how it sounded, I gave
David a posthumous thumbs up.

The Triad exhaust does fit under the valence and is hidden away. You can have it with the cool dual outlets or the passenger one can be "hidden" for a stock look.
It does sound very 911 ish, a low rumbling sound, but it is not Stainless Steel but heavy gauge steel.
Dave Ellison is going to put a WAV file of the sound on his site soon.
That car on the rack in David Said's garage is the one he was building for his wife. Had a low mile orginal 2.0l with FI in it he had been saving too. The car is being finished by some of his friends for her.(Dave Ellison is one of them)

Rouser, Thanks for posting the pics of the Triad. I never could visualize how it fit from their web site photos. Looks good!

Flynlow, The Mittlemotor muffler exits through the stock location in the late model style valance. I found that it was very well centered, better than the Bursch which was off center on mine. I ordered it directly from Mittlemotor. I contacted them via the e-mail link on their site and explained what I wanted. I ordered the muffler and a set of steel flares. I forget the exact prices, the invoice is at home, but the shipping for both was not bad. I can check on the exact amount tonight (if I remember). They sent the package via international mail and it was delivered to my post office. I had no problems and the people who helped, Magdalene and Mike, were both friendly and both spoke English.

Unhappy

Sorry to kinda change the subject, but I didn't realize that Dave Said has (apparently) passed away.

What a bummer...I know he had been ill for some time. He was a real gentleman and some of my most pleasant and satisfactory parts transactions were with Dave.

That said, if I had a street 914 and wanted a replacement for the stock banana muffler, the Mittelmotor SS sport unit would be my first choice. I researched it quite a bit and was about to buy one but ended up selling my teener. I'm just not a big fan of glasspacks (for street cars at least) and definitely not a Bursch fan.

Cheers, and RIP Dave,

Hey I was up at Triad yesterday for the first time. I talked to Dave Ellison & checked out their work. That exhaust is sweet. It sound great & looks awesome. I got a copy of the dyno from them compared to bursch. I'll try to post them in a bit. The difference was obvious Triad is the way to go. I wasn't sure about cutting a
my rear valnce to accomodate the dual. After seeing them on the car I'm not thinking anymore. They look & sound great. I'll post dyno's later
