changing spark plugs 914 2.0
I own a 73 914 2.0, modified. Is it necessary to remove the black engine covers over the spark plugs to change them. any tips or hints would be helpful

Normally the only thing to remove are the plug wires and boots. I recommend using a boot pulling tool so the wires will not get ripped out of the boots. I also recommend numbering the wires and after pulling the boots use an air hose to blow any dirt away from the spark plug/head joint area as that can gather a lot of bits and dirt. A plug socket with one of those "inserts" that holds the plug is very helpful otherwise a small extendable magnet might be necessary!

It should be a straight shot to the plugs through the plug holes, so no removal of the engine tin should be needed. If somehow you managed to get 1.7 or 1.8 heads and 2.0 engine tin, or 2.0 heads and 1.7/1.8 engine tin, you might not have good access to the plugs. But failing that, all it takes is a spark plug socket and (possibly) an extension to reach them.

plugs
the caution is to remove slowly (on extracting from under the tin) to ensure you don't drop them and then have to "go fish".

Magnetic plug socket.
Install U-joint about half way up your forearm. Stand on one foot (opposite of hand you are snaking into the engine comartment to get to plug. Stick Tongue out in same direction as foot that is off the ground. |
