Deck Height Variance????
 

When measuring the deck height on my newly assembled 914 case,I note that there is as much as a .007" variance from one side of the piston to the other - (deck ht measured above opposite ends of the wrist pin) After swapping parts around around I have determined that the problem is either that the case deck is not parallel to the crank centreline, or the rod is in some way at fault.
I haven't set the end play and the rings have not yet been installed on the nos NPR 96mm pistons. Should I be concerned? I am using a depth micrometer. Is there a 'best way' to measure deck height?
Is this amount of slop normal?

I think you did the best way. In the center of the piston is what I hear, but I don't see why you can't check along the line of the pin as well. Did you have you rods rebuilt (rebushed)? Hard to check deck of case to centerline. If you are running .060 squish, you shoudn't have a problem with valves/heads. I know what you are thinking, you don't want the piston going up and down at an angle.
