Problem installing 914 horn button
 

Hello, I am having a problem installing the horn button. I believe I have a short button, but the problem seems to be a part missing or something like that. Does the horn button connect to anything? Am I missing a ring? Here you have some pictures so you can see if there is something wrong.

would you replace the photo you p[osted in a smaller version, the photo you posted is so ig and wide it would take several computer screens to see it all at once. I can't fit in to see what your looking at. If this a stock horn button or not?

Ok, can see it a lot better now, although another 50% reduction would be even more hepful. thanks. I dont see a part that should be there i think, if this is a stock horn button, you will need to get the rubber cup that goes under the horn button. Pelican lists it in the steering column parts list. if missing or if the rubber gets old and dried up, the horn botton wont work right.

the ring with the brass contact mounts either on the column, or on the wheel depending on what year 914 you have. the ring mounts on one part, and a metal spring contact mounts on the other part. I have seen at least two major types. so make sure all your parts are made to work togeher.

I think you have the type that the ring mounts on the steering wheel (with tiny screws).,as i see the turn signal cancellation tab on it.

Here you have more pictures. I have the rubber cap, but I don't think that is the problem. What I see is that there's too much space between the end of the horn stick and where it needs to make contact. I imagine that it is pushed and then has to make contact on a metal part?

That might do it. just to letyou know you have the later style horn contact ring, that mounts on the wheel, early cars have ring on the column. I found the even later cars have the same horn contact ring, but have two, not one spring wipers to connect to the ring.

Be sure to use a good contact grease on the ring and spring contacts, if you put them together dry, they can fail from wear. On my car the spring contact was worn completey thru its thickness by the ring!

I think the 914 plunger part (the one shown by Sergio above) is part number 914 347 832 00. That's what the factory catalog seems to say.

They don't show any separate part number for the contact ring on the horn pad, though.

EDIT: Be sure to measure yours! The part description says 73mm; there is a chance that is already what you have. It wouldn't be the first time an old part was superceded for a similar newer part that needed "help" to work correctly...

Another question would be, where do I connect the wire,that comes out of the contact ring picture number 2 in the first post.

The wire from ring goes thru hole in wheel hub area and connects to spade terminal on the stock steering wheel horn pad (horn button). You install this wire to the horn pad last thing before twisting the horn pad back onto the steering wheel.

I know that's how the ~72+ horns worked. Is that how the early ones with the switch shown above also work?

It is very clear now the problem I have. Well I have two. The wrong horn contact. I need the longer 73mm one and also it was not clear where I could plug the wire from the contact ring because the little metal pin on the horn pad where it connects is broken. Is it possible to just get this part? Thanks a lot for the help!

It is not possible to get just that part that I know of, except possibly from a dismantler.

I talked a friend of mine into cutting a strip of metal and using silver solder to attach it to the right spot on my old part. It has held together for quite a few years, although not that many miles.
