Pauter Big Block
 

I don't know if this is possible or not, but I am curious. Has anyone installed a Pauter Big Block in their 914

I've seen a 454 with 8 Weber velocity stacks mounted MID-ENGINE in a 911!!! so I guess, why not.... well it probably includes a rear tube frame, and I'm not familiar with a Pauter but Chevy and Ford big block weigh maybe one and 2/3, some twice, what a small block weighs. Not much reason for all that torque in such a lite weight car like the 914, if you want to drag race tray a Camaro or a Mustang.

I was under the impression that the Pauter block was intended for air-cooled VW-based engines. I talked to a guy who had gotten a catalog or other reference from Pauter, and had pipe dreams about building a Pauter engine for his 914. We talked about it for a while, but we both knew they were just dreams.

He thought it would work, after checking a few of the measurements. The Pauter is evidently designed more for the Type I crowd, but the same case is used to build a Type IV. Some work might be needed to mount the fan and shrouding--not sure.

One interesting detail is that the Pauter case doesn't sandwich the crank between the case halves, like the VW and Porsche engines. Instead, it has an oil pan that bolts on, like a 'Murkin V8 engine, so you can get to the crank and rods from the bottom with the engine in the car. (Not sure how you'd deal with the pistons, they might get in the way of all that...)

No, I have no experience with it. If you can find an address for Pauter Machining, you could ask them if someone has.
