"W" block question

I was looking through the parts for sale area and saw an ad about someone wanting a block. One of the reply posts stated that all 914 blocks are very similar accept the early W blocks that don't have bosses cast in for the windage tray. Is this ALL "W" blocks or early blocks only? My block # is W 0067900. Will this block allow the adaption of the windage tray? Thanks in advance.

That block is a 71, 1.7. What you are describing is a 2.0, so you are out of luck for the windage tray.

You can find 2.0s cases pretty easily. I have a couple if you need one.

I am not sure if any of the "W" cases have the bosses for the windage tray. The "EA" and "EB" 1.7 cases do, as do the "EC" 1.8 cases and all the 2.0 cases. It seems to be more a question of year than of engine displacement.

Neither my copy of the Wilson VW Engine book nor the Johnson Authenticity Guide talk about the windage trays. And I don't think you can check for the presence of the tray without splitting the crankcase. Sorry.
