An Advantage to Living in the Rustbelt

Sometimes I’m a bit envious of west coast 914ers who seem to be able to get two dozen 914s to show up at events at the drop of a hat.

Here in the Chicago area, I am lucky to see one other 914 per year. If it wasn’t for Chris H., if I was to have a 914 get-together it would likely be with myself.

But, there is one advantage to this isolation: around here the cars are so rare that their mere existence is noteworthy. In my little town, I was asked to drive my 914 in our local 4th of July parade, representing my neighborhood. In the parade were near museum quality ‘vettes, t-birds, etc.—and my 914-6. Pretty funny when you think about it.

The car was an attention magnet after the parade. How many cars in this price range can turn you into a local celebrity?

Dave, I would be the other 914 coming, but I'm hoping we get a few more. 24flys? Lonely Raven? Tim W? Anyone?

Glad the parade went well Bob. I agree I get quite a few "WTH was that?" kind of looks myself around here. How fun would it be to have 6 or more in line cruising out I-80 passing the sea of minivans and Camrys (not knocking 'em, I have one too. Gotta have one reliable car around!) on the way to Ohio?

Well, I guess this might sound a bit weak coming from someone who can't go to the event (family commitment that day) but I would *really* encourage any midwest 914s to make the trip to Dave's 914 gathering.

Besides the fun of checking out other cars, there is huge benefit in just talking to other 914 owners to share advice, stories, troubleshooting advice, etc. In fact, the only reason I can even open my passenger door reliably is that my 914 "neighbor" Chris had the part and BTDT experience to solve the problem.

Wish I could go, Dave, and thanks for the effort putting together the event.
