engine code
 

hi all

i just bought a 72 914 and the guy i bought it from said he hade the engine rebult a round 45000 miles befor he parked it. that was 13 years ago. i have look at all the engine codes i can find for the 914s form 70-76 and none of the codes match the code on this engine. i cant find it listed on the vw web pages iv looked at i know its not a 2.0 as it has 4 bolts on each head for the intake. can any one on here help me out id like to know what engine i have here. this is the number on the case A020475

Where is the engine code located? It sounds like it is a EA code engine and you just can't read the E. EA is a 1.7l engine

the code is by the clutch side stamped on the flat spot. i have cleaned it with carb cleaner and even took steel wool to it and there is no other letter or number any place. im thinking it a 1.7 also but i wood realy like to be sure.
