Vacuum Leaks and Timing Procedure

Recently acquired a 1974 914 with a 2.0 and a single Weber swapped onto it. It had a decent miss and first thing i did was replace (not related to miss) plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Carb was taken off cleaned up and reassembled (good friend did it, knows Webers TOO well) got it all buttoned back up an restarted this afternoon. The miss it still has sounds more like a vacuum leak or the timing is that far off.

Could someone shed some light on the big major areas where vacuum leaks could occur? Is the connection from the intake tubes to the engine tin a bad place for leaks?

Also what is the procedure for timing this car? Thanks for all the help.

Joe

The air leaks will cause the engine to idle badly and not respond to tuning,try your idle mixture screws for starters,once the revs are up it usually will seem ok,any backfires on throttle opening?
You have 7 area's where there are air leaks are presuming the carb is good;
where the inlet manifold bolts to the heads (2)
where the rubber hose joiners are nearest to the Carb (4)
where the carb base gasket is on the manifold (1)
I don't now what distributor you have but a vacuum advance one can add 2 more leaks if your tube connecting hoses are bad,timing?let google be your helper,see how you go.

The problem is the single Weber carb. The progressive Webers do not work well on a Type 4.
