Hello,
I think my hazard switch is wired wrong. A lot of other things were wired wrong from the PO. When I pull the switch the #11 fuse (Interior lights) blows. I took the switch out of the dash (left the wires on) and it looks easy to mess up. Does anyone have a chart for what color wire goes to wich pot on the switch? Thanks,

I'd also like to know the same thing. Somehow, the PO, wired it completely wrong. Here's some examples of the PO's mess: if the hazard button is pushed completely in, the brake warning light is lit up and the warning buzzer goes off. Pull it out a quarter of an inch and everything is fine, except that the turn signals won't work. Push the button back in all the way and then the turn signals work.

Chris - Do you have a problem with your turn signals? The hazard switch gets power from
two sources. Fuse #11 is constant power (terminal 30) for the "hazard" function, it also supplies power to the interior light. Fuse #9 supplies power (terminal 15) for the turn signals. If the turn signal work OK you may have a bad switch. David - It sounds like you do have a bad switch and possibly other problems. The brake warning works off the flasher relay, pulling the switch out simply turns it off. Check out the diagrams here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/914_electrical_diagrams.htm The diagram "Current Flow Diagram 1974 - Page 3" has the hazard switch wiring. |

Thanks for all the help. I guess my switch is bad. I got a wire diagram and I made some adjustments. Now when I pull out the switch it buzzes like a bee (The relay) but does not turn on. So I think it is the Relay, so I already had one from Pelican and put it in. Now it pops the fuse again. Hmmm... The new relay's box has the right part number, but when the parking break is on it sizzels and clicks really slow. Is this the sign of the wrong relay?
Here is my wire diagram that works: Back of switch: ------------------------------------------ (30) ------ (15) ----- (+) BK/RD -- RD/WH -- RD (49a) ----- (58b) BK/GR/WH -- BK/BL -- (R) ------- (L) BK/GR -- BK/WH ------------------------------------------- ----- ----- ------------ ------------ (GND) - post on the side of the switch BR ------------------------------------------- Front of switch Key: BK = Black RD = Red WH = White BL = Blue GR = Green

Problem solved!
Hey Cool, I found the problem with my Hazard Switch.
It seems that the part that screws in with the light bulb was causing a short. Actually this now makes perfect sense. I took off that part and took out the light bulb. I went across it with a resistance meter and the part had a short. I used an exacto blade in the inside to fix up the metal leds, and it stoped shorting. Now the hazard switch works perfectly as well as the light on the switch. Too Cool!

Alright, I've found another switch, wired it correctly (I think), kind of followed the tech article (I can't read those electrical diagrams very well) and rockaria's diagram, and have the same problem as I mentioned earlier. Would a bad relay contribute to any of this? A picture would help greatly, if anyone has one. I'm kind of at a loss here.

I had a bad relay and it did not light up my dash green light. But I bet a bad relay would do all sorts of wild stuff. Also this is what I did to check for as short. Unscrew the knob as far as it will go, but not too far, and then pull out the switch. (Leave the knob in just enought to operate the switch, but not contact the inner contacts. When I did this all of my problems went away. Then I found all I has was a short in the knob with the light.
I did not get a picture of the switch, wires or relay, but I have seen a few other 914s with different colored wires believe it or not. The rear of the switch is the power leads, the middle seems to be for the dash and parking lights, and the R L ones are for the turn signals, I think. Maybe?
