Front hood seal install
 

Just picked my silver 1975 up from the body shop and now I'm digging into a newly delivered Pelican box of misc. odds and ends that my 27 year old car needed. one of them being a new front hoold seal.

What kind of product should I use to install this with? Is there any kind of prep to the car or to the seal I should do prior?

On a side note...I had a great experience with Budget Auto Pianting here in Atlanta (www.budgetautopaint.com) and I'm loving the 2000 Porsche Arctic Silver I choose.

It usually needs a little help staying in place, but I do not recommend glueing it in all the way around. That is a real good way for rust to take a foot hold in the channel.

My preference is to use just a small dab of clear RTV in the corners only, that way you can remove it once in a while to clean under it.

I agree with Sam. My hood seal has no adhesive on it whatsoever for just that reason. Just covered in talc to keep it from drying out.

And I agree with both of the above. Just wondering, could he brush a little POR-15 in the channel to check the rust. Does POR-15 come in a clear? I think I'd use a little adhesive like a spray contact that will dissolve with WD-40 if need be.

Yep..that's the ticket. The seal didn't need anything at all. It's being held in place by its own force of will. Thanks guys.

For my last 914, I just did the 90-degree corners...

Used some Permetex #82 Super Weatherstrip adhesive (Black) in the corners. I held them down temporarily with some spring clamps until everything dried up.

Worked like a champ...

Just an FYI - I did this seal replacement a while back and made the mistake of ordering what I thought was an OEM seal from "That Other Place". I received an aftermarket seal, which was very lightweight in construction and required gluing along the entire channel to keep it in place. I strongly suggest that you get an OEM seal from PP if you're considering doing this and you'll be able to use the minimum amount of glue that others have suggested here.
