How to tell if thermostat is bad

The thermostat cable in my 1975 914 1.8L was broken, so I set out to fix it. In the process I took the thermostat out and decided to check it, and now I can't figure out how to tell if it is good or bad.

I measured its length between holding it in ice and putting it in boiling water. The difference was about 6mm (1/4"). To me this seems too little, so I suspect the thermostat is broken. Also, at room temperature I can compress it by hand for about 1/2".

What do the members here say, is it broken or not? If it is broken, where can I find a replacement?

Thank you,
Andrei.

I have a good one on my bench waiting for install. Cold, you can't compress. After a few minutes in 150-160 degree (f), it should expand to 46 mm in length (per Haynes). Post a wtb in the classifieds.

Thanks, Keith. Where did you get your good one? I'll post a wtb.

Was fortunate because on a similar post a member chimed in that he had one (perhaps more) that I pm'd. Maybe you'll be as lucky. Good luck!

I also happened to come across AwesomePowdercoat.com (no connection & haven't dealt with them) who was mentioned on a different Board. Presumably they have the correct temp thermostat although it is more expensive that Retro Automotive.
