Windshield wipers not working
Started fixing little things on the new teener... Horn works again. Yeah. Now I can sit in the garage, honk the horn and annoy the wife without being physically present inside!
Windshield wipers do not work. Checked the fuses. Is their a relay for the wipers? Where is it? Fresh air blowers do not work as well. (I will clean the contacts first thing and start from there. Heater blower kicks on when I pull up the red lever. I will take the steering wheel off and the switches out as well to make sure that everything is connected. After the fuses, cleaning and switch contact verification, where do I look next? Thanks, Karl Ellzey |
Hello,
I had the same problem with my 75 when I got it. The owner was convinced it was the motor. But when I took the steering wheel off I found the wires were not even plugged in all the way! Dohhh.... They looked like they were half way on, but not making contact. But my turn switch was not working nicely either. So I bought a whole new switch set and that solved everything. Then I upgraded to a 1972 Steering column to get rid of the VW key the 75 had. So now I have a brand new trun and wiper switch set I don't need. Check the plug then check the switch. I bet it is one of those. Take care, |
The Haynes manual referred to a relay in the front trunk area "between the left support and the windshield in the gas tank area".
I can't seem to locate it? Can somebody send me a photograph of when I am supposed to be looking? Thanks, Karl |
I think that relay is for the intermitent wipe - you may not have this option.
|
I agree with James. Mine does not have the relay or intermintant option. My diagram also does not have a relay in the wiper line.

Kellzey,
The fuse, S8, feeds power to the fresh air blower and the wipers. But, if your fresh air "relay" is not working, you won't get power to the blower and wipers. The fresh air relay is one of the round relays on the back side of the fuse panel. Phil, up in Jax, FL |
Okay... wipers work now. I just reset the relays and a fuse with the correct amperage and that's done.
Still no fresh air blowing... so I will remove the control unit, clean all the contacts and check the grounds. I see some minimal sparking looking through the ashtray hole. If not that, then check the blower motor connections. I'm so exciting to be tinkering again. I love the challenge of troubleshooting and solving problems. Plus it's just nice to be in the garage and mess with the car. :D :D :D |
ahhhh yess .... the new 914 bonding ritual!! isn't it great!!
congrates on finally getting it!! if all you have to tinker with is the little things you got a good one!! hope i can see it one day! doug |
