3.6 conversion
I just bit the bullet and purchased a 3.6 motor for my 6 conversion. I would like to hear from anyone who has "been there, done that" or has any insights to offer. I would like to leave it as stock looking as possible and hopefully avoid hacking away at my trunk bulkhead. I did see one pic of a 3.6 conv where the throttle body was swung aroung to the front and it seemed to fit without butchery. I do have reservations about the tranny (901) holding up with this motor, but I've heard from some that it will live??

Sounds like a fun project!
I know of a few 3.6-3.8 race cars around here, but they are balls-out, heavy fabrication types of machines. Your best bet for some basic conversion tips, parts sources and so forth is to search around in the archives here and on Rennlist. A guy in San Diego named Steve Iverson has been putting together a 3.6 GT-flared street car for a while. Steve has a web page here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/siverson/ I think he has quite newer shots and info somewhere too but I don't have a link handy. |
Most here have 2.7 - 3.2 conversions....
3.6 is doable and you can do it without hacking the trunk just not sure of anyone here that has done one. The 901 should be OK need to upgrade the Intermediate plate on the tranny and forget 1st gear, you can try Ottos for Transmission help. |
You might want to call Patrick Motorsports, tell them what you're up to, and ask for advice / pix. They've done quite a few 3.6 conversions and they photograph just about everything they do.

Ditto on the Patrick Motorsports.
www.patrickmotorsports.com They have a lot of the DME conversion stuff, and the accessory block off panels that you will need. Check out their project cars... drooooooollll......http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/happy.gif |
Just a thought, didn't Wayne to a 3.6 conversion? I'm sure Pelican could help you as much or more so than anyone else mentioned above.

Wayne's is a 2.7.
Tony Inae also did a 3.6 in his 914. Last I heard, he was on his third 901 gearbox... :( Not sure how fresh or built-up any of them were, though. --DD |
