914-6 engine drop
 

Greetings all!

I have a '70 914-6 project that I am going to get underway soon. Its has a long dead 2.4 911 S or E motor and the original 2.0 liter motor was traded away 30 years ago... My plan is to put together a carburated 3.2 engine and mate that to the existing 901 tranny. I haven't seen any articles on dropping the motor in the 6 and would appreciate any direction that could be provided. I have previously built a 3.0 liter motor for my '79 SC. I am excited about this project!

It's pretty similar to the 914-4 engine drop. The firewall mounting is different, and the fuel and electrical connections at the motor are different, and the throttle connection is different. But it's still pretty much "unhook it all, remove a few bolts, and lower away". Or possibly raise the car up off the motor.

Dropping a six is the same as a four, just a bit heavier. I would suggest doing the transmission and engine as a unit as the balance is easier to manage. Here is what we used to do.
- Degrease the engine and transmission very well.
- Disconnect batt. neg cable.
- On the top, disconnect the fuel lines and ALL electrical lines AFTER you label each one.
- Pull the rubber seal between the engine tin and body.
- Disconnect the case vent line if there is one.
- Jack it way up and put on stands, solid
- On the bottom, disconnect the throttle linkage, clutch cable, flat ground wire, speedo cable, wires to starter, oil lines catching the oil in a large enough container.
- Cap the oil lines to keep dirt out.
- Disconnect the heater ducting if equipped.
- Get a strong enough jack and then loosen the front and rear mounting bolts.
- Do one last check to make sure nothing is still attached to the engine and transmission to the body.

When dropping the engine make sure it comes straight down so nothing gets bent or damaged. We always left the exhaust attached until the assembly was out.

Everyone forgets to remove the transmission ground strap. Then they forget to connect it when re-installing.
