While changing my clutch cable I found two rigid metal bars (about the same size as the rear anti-sway - 3/4 inch or so) that run inside the tunnel and end at the firewall. Is this for less chassis flex? Or just to hold the tunnel up?

Sure those aren't your heater flapper box controls?

I don't have a heater except for windows up - air conditioning, windows down.
I will look at them closer, but they are solid bars and they don't pass the firewall. They also bow out about an two inches at the end - I put my weight on one of them with my hand and it didn't give. |

My car doesn't have anything like that.

Sounds like the tubes for the heater flapper control cables. They are on each side of the center support tunnel, come out a couple of inches and bend towards each side of the car.

SSSix, Chris - I think you may be correct, I checked and they are hollow. I had to poke some crud out of the engine side of the firewall, to find the holes. Inside the tunnel they are the factory orange color - I am shocked at how rigid they are for just a cable protector!?
I have a defroster too, also works a hand towel ![]() If I want to turn up the music, I just sing a little louder! The horn is finger operated (middle finger) Smog equipment? uh - I got lots of smog, that tearing sound is the ozone layer. But it is fast! |

Jay, I've been looking for a replacement horn, I think I'll use your idea!
Yeah, those tubes do seem to be overkill for the heater controls, but they probably lasted longer than their spiral wound counterparts. BTW, in their original configuration, those tubes poked thru the firewall and stuck out into the engine bay by an inch or two.

My smog equipment, heating and defrosting were all combined. The smoke was contained in the interior through the heater, while the windows never fogged up due to all the oil vapor on them.
