914 starting problems
 

72 1.7 with Weber IDFs. Car starts and runs fine once warmed up. Drive down the road pull into gas station shut it off, fill car, go to start car, crank and crank, no start. Pulled air cleaners to check for gas. With someone pressing on the pedal I see gas being squirted into each bore so it's not fuel.

To add to the mystery, yesterday driving down the road, car goes dead. Alternator light comes on tach goes to zero engine dead. Pull over. Crank engine. Cranks and cranks, no start. Wait 10 minutes, engine starts, able to make a u-turn back to home and all electrical goes dead. No crank, no dash lights, no fuel pump. Dead silence. Leave car. Walk home. Call for a tow. I drive down to meet the tow truck, get in the car. Car starts right up. WTF?

This sounds like electrical to me but I don't even know where to start. Battery is brand new and seems to be being charged by the electrical circuit since it's always at top voltage. Checked all grounds. All look good including the tranny to body strap. Starter wires all look good and well secured.
