1.8T Audi/VW /Radiators.
I'm still planning my 914. I hope it will be a big money saver in the end.
I've been considering the option of the Audi, or VW 1.8t engine for the engine swap. Needless to say that brings up the Radiator Debate. I do not want to chop up the front trunk. A 1.8 is a pretty narrow engine. Would it be possible to have the engine in the car, and then on the side walls mount a pair of radiators with side scoops like the Blue Thunder guy has, and achieve enough cooling? Through the scoops would need to come enough air for the engine, and the intake, the AC condenser, and the Intercooler. If needed I guess a Rocker panel scoop could also be added. The dimensions of side holes would be 10x10. They could be larger, up to 12X12. Or streach longer down the side of the car, to something like 10X18. (10 length, and 18 high, really chops the side of the car up though) The 1.8T provides 150 Hp. The same engine with some minor changes powers the TT with 180 Hp. Some audi nuts I know are pulling 300+ horse, with 300+ torque. Anyway its the motor I like. Now to work out all the bugs. Ed Hachtel |

Ed,
I like your idea's (we are doing one soon), but why cut up the sides of the car instead of the front ?? The plumbing nightmare (ala Boxster and 996) for 2 radiators is not much fun. But to entertain your idea: Audi 5000's have a radiator that mounts semi sideways. You may want to look at the Boxster radiators also. B |
