Flickering lights

I have a 1972 1.7 liter 914 and was recently driving in slow traffic when suddenly my car almost cut out on me, but continued to keep running and is running normally now. However, two things developed after this. First, the parking brake light and the alternator warning light blink on an off and never stop. Secondly (and this happened about a half hour after this) I went to start my car, turned the key and nothing happened. It wouldn't crank at all, but the lights and gauges worked fine. As it would go, I was at a friends house who had a meter to check my battery and it was putting out what it was supposed to. However, after trying another few times, it started and hasn't done this since. So does anyone have any idea what this issue might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
