Tail to Side Shifter
I have replaced my tail-shifter with a side-shifter and replaced the cross-brace engine mount at the same time. What do I do for mounting the engine mount to the body of the car? Do I remove the originals and get late model mounts? Do they fit? Enlighten me.
Thanks CWP/VIR |
Take a look at Tom Wilson's book on rebuilding the VW Engine, the section on removing the 914 engine. There is a good picture of the later mounts. They appear to be solid not the flexable rubber that we have. I am soon to go to a side shifter and from the basis of that picture just plan to put some solid steel bar in place of the rubber mounts that are there.

Yes, go to the solid mounts. You have options however. You can go the route of the factory mounts or there are some companies that sell aftermarket solid mounts that look like the factory rubber, except they are made from solid aluminum. They are sold by the 911 race shops. Either way you decide to go, installation is very easy. Make sure your tranny mounts are in good shape as well.

I think the side shifter uses the later engine mount with a hole in it for the shift rod.
