battery in the 914 blew up today

Went to drive the 914 today after it has sat for a few weeks. Battery was on a tender and the battery is aprox. 6 months old. I unhooked the charger and did a quick feel of the battery, it was not warm and all look OK. I turned the ignition key and BOOM !!! I popped the hood and noticed one of the bank of three battery caps was missing. It blew off in the explosion. Found it laying on the engine shelf. Pulled the battery and noticed the case was cracked by the negative terminal. Took the battery back to where I bought it and they gave me a new one no charge. So was it a defective battery or related to the battery tender or ???? I must say it really got my attention.

I would definitely check the battery tender. If the battery was warm with that small of a charger, they are usually under 1 Amp, the voltage regulation is gone and boiled one of the cells dry. Why the battery blew up is unknown. I've used a home made tender for over 25 years and one battery lasted for over 20 years. It was a hell of a good battery, an el cheapo autolite that I got from Checker. Your problem would have gotten my attention too. Oh S***

Make sure you wash all that area down with baking soda solution to neutralize the acid that no doubt sprayed all over/

Battery was not warm to the touch and tomorrow I'll remove the battery and do a baking soda wash of the engine bay.
