Carb help
I am a complete newbie to 914's but not to automotive work. I just recently purchased a 1973 Porsche 914 1.7 litre that has been converted to carb. (not carbs). It has a single barrel side draft carb of some sort on it. The air breather is VW and has part #'s on it. (I don't have them handy right now). Does anyone know where I can find information on how these cars are converted from FI to carb(s)? I have heard of cars that have dual webber carbs or a 2 barrel carb of some sort.
My reason for asking is that when the car warms up it tends to not idle correctly and stalls. It does not do this when it is first started. It will run fine, and idle fine, but when it warms up it stalls. I'm thinking carb problem. Could it be something else? I've heard that in the newer 914's the fuel pump was moved to the front of the car to lessen vapor lock. Could it be vapor lock that is causing it to stall when hot? Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated. I have adjusted the carb as much as I can (it seems to have only 1 adjustment on it). I currently have it idling pretty high when it first starts but still stalls when hot. Thanks |

I would need to see what carb it is and get all the numbers off of it that you can.
I personally have never seen a side draft Weber/Dell on a 914. Not saying it cant be done, I'm just doubting that you actually have a side draft carb. Most people with 1.7 engine (previous owner) would not go to the trouble of fabbing a intake for a side draft carb. These are side draft carbs: B |

Side draft carbs...
Sorry to but in...Just some websites and pix of side-draft carbs installed on VW T4 engines...
These are Aviation applications. Maybe someone installed an airplane carb on a 914?!?!? First site: http://www.greatplainsas.com/pg28.html Next site: http://www.altimizer.com/specs.html Some pix...

Cory
The first two carbs look to be updraft - the type installed on aircraft engines (carb is below block). But then again, it could be my old eyes.

That manifold doesn't look like it would be very efficient. Do they flow well? Interesting though.

For the RPM aircraft operate at, it should do fine. Aircraft engines are constant speed with max RPM at about 3000.

I will take some pictures of it when I get home from work today and write down any/all numbers I can find (including what is on the air breather). Once I have all that stuff if you can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! I think I'm going to enjoy working on this car!
