Tranny Leak at Speedo Cable

I am leaking transmission fluid from where the speedo cable enters the rear of the transmission. What is the fix and how difficult a job is it to perform? Its making a mess on my garage floor!

The fix is simple, but messy. Order the $5.00 O-ring from Pelican, drain your tranny, undo the 10mm retaining bolt that faces the rear of the car (it is somtimes easier to remove the muffler to get to the bolt, depends on what muffler/header you are running), carefully pull the drive unit out of the tranny, replace the O-ring and re-assemble. You may have to remove the speedo cable from the "L" drive as well.

I just did the exact replacement.. and the o-ring is REALLY cheap at pelican, few bucks..definitely less than 5...

be ready with something to catch the fluid when you pull the drive shaft out, because the tranny fluid WILL burst out.. make sure you have the hex tool to unscrew the tranny fluid plug too so that you can fill it back up (tom at pelican has that too, think it was $7.50)..

other than that.. it's a cinch.. if i can do it.. anyone can..

oh.. i'm not sure if this is a necessary step.. but i pumped the gear into the drive unit a few times because on mine.. there seemed to be some pressure build-up, and i had trouble getting the drive shaft back in.. the pumping solved it..

ok.. hope that helps..

Jeff
