Woodward Dream Cruise

This Saturday, August 17, is the 8th annual Woodward Dream Cruise near Detroit. There won't be a lot of Porsches (there are some!), but if you are within driving distance and want to see one helluva car event, this is it. Typically they get 30,000 cars and over a million people. www.dreamcruise.org The website has always been kind of lame because not enough pics and no videos to give you a feel for it, but it does have lots of history, directions, etc., that are helpful. You can walk for four or five miles up and down both sides of Woodward Avenue and see an example of just about every car made since 1950. The total length of it is 16 miles from Ferndale to Pontiac, but most of the action is at the south end from 11- to 15 Mile roads.

I'll be there myself. If it is perfecly dry, I'll be driving my '61 Chevy Impala w/47,000 miles. Otherwise, I'll have one of my Pcars out.

If you go, go early the traffic gets unbearable from 1-8pm.

Anyone else going?

It's true, this is one big event! I have attended all other years, but will be out of town for this one. The best crusing starts early in the week. I went through the area last night & they were out in force between rain drops. Last year (Saturday) it took me (1) hour to go (1) mile. Cars heat up & big supercharged motor ones puke their gut's. I understand our local Gary Stellmach has a spot reserved along the route on Fri. night for our 914 Porsche friends. We always see lots of Porsche cars & meet new ones for our group. Back in the 50's & 60's I was apart of that street racing scene, but we didn't know we were having so much fun(black 53 Ford Cpe w/331 inch Chrysler Hemi & 29 Ford Hi-Boy Roadster). All the stories you hear were all true, It was a great time to grow up.

Well, true to form the Cruise was great fun. Only saw one 914, one of the bright dark greens; Irish, Zambezi or Palma metallic, not sure because it was going by at about 45 on a backstreet accompanied by a 911 and a 356. Lots of 924/944/911/Boxster cars and even a few 356s and 928s. My 914 is not presentable yet, but probably by next year it will make it. I did get to drive my friend's 51 Pontiac Chieftain. It has a 1971 Ram Air III 455 in it, dynoed at 425hp, 0-60 in the mid-5s... makes me sure I'm going to want more hp out of my 1.8 when rebuild time comes around. Of course, when we get to a few turns, I can catch up!

Friday night, there were 3 Factory 6's parked along Woodward about 10 mile road. Only saw one other one all weekend.

Traffic is terrible at times. 2 mph. Plenty of cars to see, just wish they would ban minivans etc during the cruise. At 2mph it's a good way to get clutch-eites...

Even saw a Thing with Rabbit CIS installed. Hmmm... Wonder if I could do that with a T4?
