strange substance on pistons??

Hi there,

Anyone that can help me with this? Last year I took my 914 2.0L engine's cylinder heads off. I changed the joints and put the engine to restart the season. All summer I had problems with high revs in idle, and decided this winter to take a second look. One side the cylinder heads and top off the pistons looked normal, but the other side was burned like hell!! What could have be the problem? never seen it before.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Marc

Are you burning oil out the exhausts? Looks like rings or valve guides may be bad or rings did not seat.

Post pictures of spark plugs.

Well, high idles are caused generally because of air leaks and I have seen some engines where the pistons and possibly the heads were burned badly, even with the tops of the pistons having metal flaking up badly. Pistons tend to show the worst because of the metal alloy mixes used in many when they are made. If you can get a picture of the piston looking down and show the burning, it might help but diagnosing something as bad as this needs a mechanic familiar with air cooled engines to look at it.
