sqirrels in the speedo cable
Yoh
The speedometer in the yellow peril has never worked. I have the 76 914 with the cat counter in the passenger foot well. It may be pretty weird to those who just have a cable from the trans straight to the speedo but hell, It was just another 76 sucker punch. I digress. I have tested the speedo cable from the cat counter to the speedo and the speedo works when the cable is run anti clockwise! I think. I have tested the cable from the transmission to the cat counter and it operates. I have tested the cable from the transmission to the speedometer bypassing the cat counter and it operates. I have connected the cable to the transmission and disconnected the cable from the cat counter and driven the car and you can see the cable turning. So why is the speedometer not working. I have bypassed the cat counter and run the cable from the transmission straight to the speedo and still no go. Is it possible the cable is turning in the wrong direction for some reason? Any ideas? I'm stumped. I'll post some pics when I get my sh-t together. Last edited by TR; 01-24-2014 at 07:04 PM.. |

Hi TR
Perhaps your angle driver is sheared inside. I would jack the rear of the car up as high as you can, so the transmission oil does not leak out, then loosen the 13 mm bolt holding your angle driver to the transmission and remove the angle driver. If it's sheared it will still turn the cable. Better yet,, you can have somebody attempt to grab the spinning portion of the cable with some needle nose pliers at moderate speed. The cable should try to turn. Nice chatting with ya over in Hollywood. -Robert |

tested my patients
Hi Robert
I have checked everything again and each section appears to work. Its only when its all hooked up together the speedo won't. If you disconnect the speedo at the cat counter and drive the car you can see the cable going around in its sheath. I connected the drill up to the cable at the transmission and the needle on the speedo works?????? Bugg#erd if I know. |

I don't fully understand what you have done, don't understand the squirrel part, Does that mean it makes a squirrel noise when operating?
In last post are you asking if the speedo should work when driven by a drill motor at the tranny end? Your last sentence was posed as a question, (six ? marks follow the sentence) but does not make sense to me, as it is written as a statement. If it is a question, yes a drill motor at the tranny end of the cable should drive the speedo to work. make sure the cables inside the sheaths are not broken and assure that the square drive ends both male and female are not stripped out. A broken cable can drive a bit, if the ends of the break are jagged and catch, that may give intermittent operation, and/or slippage. |

Squirrels gone.
Hi cabinet maker, yep I can see the confusion, sorry.
I think I worked it out by a process of elimination. I have had all the cables out, the speedo out and every thing is in good condition. I put a little WD40 down the short cable which goes from the speedo to the cat counter. The squirrel has gone, the cable must have been a bit dry, but the speedo still does not work. I drove the car fast in reverse and yes, the speedo works in reverse. I know the cable is somehow rotating backward. I'm assuming the PO has put a 911 angle drive in the transmission. I don't have a 914 angle drive so it will be an expensive experiment to buy one to test the theory. But I'm positive that's the problem. The part numbers for the early 911 and 914 are noted below. 914 angle drive 914-318-029-01-M82 911 angle drive 911-318-029-00-M100 |

ok, sounds good, if the speedo goes backwards, and the part numbers indicate you have a 911 angle drive, then you likely will have the fix with a 914 drive. I see an angle drive lists for $101 US on the pelican website for a new drive.
If that is too steep, consider a used one, place a wanted ad, or try High Performance House in redwood city California, they sell used stuff for the 914, they ship world wide (phone 650 364-6234) Golly I thought every thing worked backwards in the Southern hemisphere! Is your car converted to right hand drive? I went to Australia many years ago, very nice time there, nice people, nice scenery, and some way cool cars I have never seen before. I recall there was a big business of converting foreign cars to right hand drive. good luck |

Speedo fixed
Bought a 2nd hand speedometer angle drive on ebay and the speedo now works. The new drive operated in a counter clockwise direction so that solved the problem.
