1.8 Compression Numbers and Data.
 

I have a 74 1.8 with the engine out of the car. I acquired the car with the engine out and trying to figure out if the engine needs work or an overhaul before I put I back in the car. So I checked the compression with a little fogging oil in each cylinder, Cold. Check the all cylinders with 100 psi at TDC, cold. for 30 seconds and measured the pressure drop. Check air intake, exhaust port, oil fill and dipstick tube with my stethoscope hose for leaking sound. Don't know the mileage but its probably around 80,000. See the data cylinder results. Got any advice on which way to go with this engine.

don't know how to attach a pdf, but I can say it is really hard to get meaningful compression or leakdown data on cold motor. A sticky ring that would free up after 2 seconds at 1000 rpm, may leak like crazy when slowly cranked by hand.

doing a compression test on a cold motor that has been sitting may give you false negatives.

I'd drain the oil and look for metal bits, if clean and if you think she only has 80k on her, then go for it, put her in the car and run it, then after she has run a while, you can then run a diagnositic test that is meaningful compression, leakdown, oil pressure, power etc...

If you want to, tear it down, but that has a costly down side even if you reuse most of the all the parts if you find her in good shape. it is a lot of labour to tear down and rebuild a motor, and it is all wasted if the motor was good to start with.
The down side of testing the motor in the car is low even if she is indeed a bad motor, as you maybe out of little time and effort and few materials compared to an engine rebuild.
