Help With asking price 74 914
I am considering selling my 1974 914 and was curious what a fair asking price would be.
The car was purchased new in Wyoming and was part of an estate 20 years ago. Shortly after the car had a run in with a tree and has been parked in the garage since. I have changed the oil and filter, installed a starter that was missing, jumped the seat switch relay, and the car fires right up on starting fluid. I am not getting the fuel pump to come on so I have a replacement in the works. The gas tank was drained prior to going into storage with little/no bad fuel smell and appears visually to be in good condition. Although I have not had the ability to drive the car the transmission shifts smoothly between gears and doesn't have any slop. The previous owner thought they would like to restore the car so there are a number of spots where the paint was sanded to bare metal?? Overall the tub and most of the body seem to be in great shape in comparison to what else I have seen on the market with the exception of the right 1/4 panel. The driver side fender also shows some signs of an accident. where there is some Bondo cracking and can be seen where the PO had sanded it down in that particular spot. I am fighting with the idea of making the repairs to the body via steel flares and having a fun little rat rod 914 to cruise around in or selling it to advance the progress of a couple of other projects I already have in the works?? Thoughts on what a fair asking price would be?? Thanks! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by cdill; 02-10-2014 at 05:47 AM.. |

I would pay around $500 for this car in the SF Bay. More if I were on the East coast.

Thanks for the feed back. Not sure I would let it go for a as little as $500 as I could sell some of the parts for more than that and have a tub. That being said you have got me thinking especially after seeing your signature. Are you doing a 1.8T swap into your car from a VW/Audi?? if so I would be very curious as to what you have done and what is involved in this! |

Depending on Engine (1.7,1.8,2.0) and how well it runs you can definatley get more than 500 for it. Interior according to pics looks pretty decent, and the minimal rust is promising. Is the car D-Jet, or Carbed? How is the Hell Hole?
Rear Quarter panel can be replaced relatively easy and the car would get repainted with a new owner regardless.. If the fuel pump gets fixed and you get the timing/valves checked for proper clearance. you could ask for a fair 1000-1500 for the car. Hope this helps

I agree with Mike, its a ~$500 car as it is shown. I see the parts of an L-jet FI system, which would be correct for a stock 1974 914 with a 1.8L engine...its not D-jet and the 1.8L engine is not desirable, has little value, even if it runs. The interior is pretty tired, needs completely redone. Steel wheels.
We also see a rust in important places - battery area, front trunk lid, we have not seen the other important places yet, leading to the notion that the car has a lot of rust that needs repair. Any bad parts like the dash, are worthless and needs replacement or restoration, taking away from its real value today. Sure there is more than $500 of parts on it...but not much more...that's always the case that a car is worth more in parts than as a whole car. But you must work to get that extra money by parting it out. So if you want max $$$, then part it out. If you want a car to restore then its a good place to start. Just trying to be straight with you... |

I do appreciate the responses as I am really struggling with a couple of ideas of what it could be, let someone else have a shot at it, or selling off the useful parts and send it to the crusher?? The trunk area at the very back of the car does have a slightly "elevated" level of surface rust on the floor which I understand is pretty typical of this car. Although this is present the floor is still pretty sold and there is no sign of daylight coming through. bowlsby you mention that there are some other places on the car that are typically rusty that I have not shown?? curious as to what those may be and I can provide some photos. |
