320mm Momo Monte Carlo -

350mm Nardi/Personal Fittipaldi -

IMHO the Personal wheels are made a bit better than the Momo's, but they are a bit spendier and the hubs for the early cars are not easy to find at all. (Different bolt pattern than Momo/Sparco wheels; unique hub).

I think I like the look of the Momo Race wheel. I think the anodized silver tim would compliment the little silver buttons in the center of the gauges.

I like that wheel also. My track guy's normally opt for the cheapest MOMO they can get.

Your going to have 50k in that car before you know it.

Why are steering wheel adapters for a 70 914 harder to find?
I was looking through a couple of catalogs and couldn't find
hub adapters for 70 - 72 cars.

Bob,

The early columns have a funky horn ring that the later cars don't have.

Also, the later column is a dead ringer for a whole bunch of VW's that used the same column. This means more aftermarket parts when it comes to the VW's.

Keep looking the adapters are out there.

I've already been to the 914 world and back 3 times. This is my fourth. Somebody stop me.

This is the first time I've done six conversion though! This is also the first time I'll have the money to do it though.

My first car in high school was a '75. I totally restored a '74 1.8 about 3-4 years ago. Had to sell that due to the birth of my disabled son. (Probably for about a 1/3 of what I had in it). Imagine that!

Now I'm in the game again. I love these cars... Basically because I'm an engineer by education (not by profession). I broke all my toys as a kid, just to see how they worked. 914s are easy to work on. If you can remember how you took it apart, you can put it back together. Usually somewhere along the process you figure out what doesn't look right, repair it, and you're up and running again.

The only thing I won't mess with is painting and body work. Anything mechanical or cosmetic, I'll work on it!

You have joined the "914 freaks club". Any more than 2 cars and your a honary member.

I have no idea why I have stuck with these cars for so many years. I have met some really good people along the way and met a few that wherent so good.

i know you wanted after market but i like posting pics. i like the padded stock unit. $200 to $300 steering wheels? forget it. b you crack me up.just when i think you're making a kinder/ polite reply the s.a. rears it's head. at least you're consistant.

This is and old MOMO. They don't make this one anymore, but the Monte Carlo looks pretty close. The small diameter makes it hard to see the speedo and also it runs close to the wiper arm. I find myself turning on the wipers accidentally while taking a corner sometimes

Personally I can't stand the stock "school bus" steering wheels. They are SO huge and have no anatomical grips. FWIW you can get the Momo for like $120 from GPR and certain other suppliers (not including hub). I sold one with a 914 hub, perfect condition, for $125 last year...not a real spendy upgrade.

Tom M - you can get a hub-extension that moves it out an inch or so; that helps with the turn signal/wiper stalk issue. Smart Racing Prods sells one.

GPR also used to have the Momo horn buttons; they are listed on the Rennlist parts classifieds and ebay all the time too, but are now $50-60/ea due to scarcity (I was able to sell the Momo crest buttons for 15-20/ea, which helps). Apparently there were licensing issues re. using the crest, because Momo stopped making them around 2 years ago.

I also remove my wiper arms for track events -- it is highly distracting when you acidentally knock the wipers on in a tight corner. Not to mention that the peanut gallery will enjoy it.

different needs, different objectives. $125+ shipping, a $50 crest,i'll bet a hub is at least $40. that's $215+shipping. like i said $200 to $300.

Tom,

Cut your arms down for the wipers and turn signals. They are aluminum and can be trimmed back and filed smooth.

I cut them a little extreme, but these are on race cars that are still street legal.

This keeps me from cutting driving gloves and the such.

A dash switch for the wipers is another way to go...assuming you aren't using the hokey tire pressure driven washer system
