broken key 914
Hi
I am located in belgium and have 914 ready for shipment in new jersey. Unfortunately the shipper broke the key and he has problems getting a replacement key. Seller spoke abt a set of keys but unfortunately there is only one. I have sent two blank uncut keys by fedex today which I bought on ebay. Does anybody has experience with broken carkeys ? Is it realy that difficult to make a new one out of two pieces ? Anybody who could help in the new jersey area or could give me some advice ? It has been 3 weeks now after the pick up at the owners home...some delay also occured as you had a bit of snow overthere ;) Thks Danny Repost, used wrong section. Apologies |

When i broke my key finding an exact replacement or making one from the two pieces was too hard to do. I ended up getting another 914 key and changed the small lock pieces to fit my new key. Disecting the ignition lock, and door locks was a pain but fixed my issue.

Pull the trunk lock if is matching and have a lock smith make a key to fit it.

Most of the locks are easy to change out, except for the ignition lock. Many 914s I have seen have at least a couple of keys, because one or more locks have been replaced over the years. (My own car originally had four different keys!) So be careful assuming that a key that works the rear trunk lock or the driver's door lock will work the ignition.
The ignition lock can be replaced. I believe the tech article on our site will get you most of the way there (if you have a 72-74 914). The ignition switch setup is different in the 70-71 and in the 75-76 cars, though. I would think that a good lock shop could cut you a key using the parts of the old one. But it might take a few tries to get it perfected. --DD |

The issue is that the shipper who broke the key (I suppose the steeringwheel was locked and the driver who picked up the car did not move the steeringwheel a bit to left and right and just forced/turned the key) wants to replace the key as part of their service but that they prefer to do it cheap. They had a key cut but it didn't work but also did not go back to the shop... perhaps it is only a small adjustment... I saw some correspondence between the shipper and my local forwarder and they stated that they could ask a locksmith to come on site (shippers warehouse) but that he already charges 100 usd before doing anything... Not cheap but actually none of my business. The car is already three weeks in their warehouse and I want the car..... Proposed that they just put it in a container and send me the broken key so I can solve the problem myself at my doorstep...but so far they still want to fix the issue before loading the car.... nice of them but I realy hope they don't keep the car for a couple more weeks... I had everything well arranged (the PPI, the payment, the pick up etc) but this is now becoming a nightmare... Now for sure you keys will likely not match, if you follow my links you can fix this problem. One of those projects on the ""to-do list".;)
