914 rear window defrost

I picked up a parts car and it has a rear window defrost with the Porsche switch on the dash. Is this a rare option?

Probably worth about $200 for the window assuming it is in good condition and the switch is about $25. I like this option on our cars. I have one for my Six.

I ordered that when I bought my Six back in 70 but they didn't put it in. I really didn't see a need for it because it never had frost on it when it was parked outside back in the early days. Rare? Probably very rare.

Thanks for the information everyone. The window is in good shape. I may keep it for my 914 restoration.

This option was offered in the very early days but it was rarely purchased. As close as the 914 rear window is to your hand who really needed it? And back then people raved about the 'wires in the window' and wondered what amazing invention could ever top it.

And then the state of New York thought these wires were so great they made it the law that every new car sold in the state had to have them. Well, they really were that great if the only thing you had ever known was a hot water heater blowing on your rear window.

But since NY had to have them Porsche really did make them available everywhere. But almost no one bought them because of the closeness of the rear window to your hand.

So is this rare today? Without a doubt. Since 1970 I have seen two cars with this option and one of those was in a Texas wrecking yard where it was wearing NY plates.

My 70 six has it. It was delivered to northern CA when new.

I have also seen a couple other cars in So Cal with the rear defrost option.

defrost rear

everyone is right somewhat rare, back in the late 80's parted out over a 100 914's 3-914-6 (what was i thinking) and less than 5% had the rear window defrost opt.
