not another 14x5 1/2" tire question
 

sorry...dont mean to bug...have a 1974 ...914...2.0...the car is almost done....im running 14x5 1/2" fuchs....dont ask why...low and tufff...thats the look im after...what size tire do i run???...i dont want a tall 4x4 tire....and i dont want a low tire that will rip off the reflectors when i change lanes...any ideas on a tufff looking tire thats at the right height and right price????..thanks ..john..c.

although I have no direct experience with them, I have read here that 195-60/65-15 is the way to go. Personally, when it comes time for new tires for my car, I am going with the 195-65-15

Your tire guy would look at you really funny if you asked him to install 15" tires on a 14" wheel :D

Seriously, you won't find many tires to choose from in 14" sizes these days. Certain 15" sizes (205/50) are still well-supported, due to the plethora of pocket-rocket/ricer and vintage cars using them. But all of the real tire-industry efforts are in the 16" and up sizes these days.

Personally I think 15x6 Fuchs (5-lug) are the way to go on a 914 street car. Or, if you want to stay with a 4-lug setup but gain a little bit of width, Panasports are killer "vintage-looking" wheels. Of course the stock 15x5.5" 4-lug Fuchs are hard to beat for quality/looks/correctness too.

You're right though -- 195/60's are just about perfect IMHO for the stock 15x5.5 wheels. Too bad you can't get any competition, or many 'performance' tires in that size lately. The 195/65's are good too, for street cars at least.

Some of the "rice rocket" tires will work pretty well. I think that Falken Azenis are available in 195/60-14. Check around in that size. The car will be pretty darned low, but you might not wind up scraping on every speed-bump...

I don't think I'd go any lower profile than that.

I had the 14X5.5 Fuchs and went with the 185/70 size. I think this was the stock from factory size. They were very nice.

I have the same wheels on a 914-6 and I am running 195/60/14.
I just bought another set of the Yokohama AO32 racing tires for it in that size.
If you need all weather, try Pirelli P6000.

both available at tire rack in that size.
