B, are you sure that is the same chassis as the car shown in Excellence? The photos from when it was raced in So Cal show something that bears very little resemblance indeed to a 914-6 GT. Unless it was all add-on plastic panels, there was a good bit of the body removed at some point.
Or the ID of the Kinst car as the Turbo'd car is incorrect. Or I'm totally out in left field. (Wouldn't be the first time!) The Excellence article, as I recall, did leave a (very very small!) doubt as to the exact identity of the car. --DD |
It was all body panels strapped onto a tub just like a current EP or FP 914 race car.
You can see where they had to add material to the original fenders to reinstall the GT flares. It wasnt much, but nothing like Excellence described. I'm starting beleive more and more that the people making the negative statements about Llews car have never actually built a 914 from the ground up...starting with a bent but correct matching numbers tub. I applaud his effort. Very few people can pull off what Llew pulled off in restoring that car. B |
Wow, I started this thread an hour or so ago, and it's already two pages!
"I work well with the race people, but the concourse people is who I need to complete my circle of Porsche people. This car would offer me the chance to "rub elbows" with the wealthy concourse guy's. " Gee, I hope that remark isn't directed at me! I don't even have a car that drives right now (they all broke a few weeks ago). I'm limping around in the 356, and yesterday I had to borrow Tom's car! What are the values of the M471s, and how do they compare to the GTs? It's important to remember that the 911 Carrera RSs are going for about $50-70K fully restored. I personally would rather have an RS for that money than an M471. Although a GT with some history would be great. The factory GTs all had the 906 race motor, right? -Wayne |
I personally am not clear on what engine came in any of the M471's or GT's.
Plan on paying 30k or so for a decent M471 car. B |
I remember reading in Road and Track several years ago that thier photogapher Jeff Zwart had a 914 with the M471 option on it. Anyone else know about this?
|
Jeff has a six, that one that was in excellence, right? The yellow one?
-Wayne |
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the M471 option and how is it different from the GT?
|
Wayne,
I recall seeing a Green GT for sale by PAP in new rochele NY, advertised on Hemmings online. If you decide that this is 1 you might seriously consider, Id be happy to look at it ahead of time for you. You would have to check with them to see if the car is at their NY location. Alot of the cars they have on consignment, are out of state. If you get to that point where you want info on the car, come up with a check list for me and I'll answer your questions to the best of my ability. Good luck Tod |
Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't an M471 was just a flared /6
Or did it include the fg hoods, bumpers and bigger engine-grille as well? Cheers, Jeroen |
All I can tell you about the "street" M471 cars is what I've read in Johnson's book, which you can look at for yourself. It evidently was a regular 914-6, more or less completely stock except--
It had fender flares. It had front and rear valences that flared at the ends to match the fenders. It may have had rocker covers with flared ends--not sure. It had wider (6" I think) wheels with 1" spacers to help fill the wheel wells. All the rest evidently was stock; motor, brakes, suspension, etc. M471 was also supposedly the option code for the "race" GTs. But there seems to be some confusion about the nomenclature... The race GTs did not in general get the 906 engine that I am aware of. They got a whole bunch of different engines depending on what the race was, what was legal for the class at the time, and what the factory felt like putting in the car (or selling to the customer) at that moment. I would not be surprised if that included a 906 engine on occasion, but I don't think they necessarily got those that often. --DD |
A friend of mine has a real M471 here in colorado. I looked the car over at a track event and came to the conclusion that there are all different combinations of equiptment and items on these:
His car has: an original stock 914/6 "T" motor. of course the metal fenders. Original fiberglass front and rear hoods.. (with the balsa wood) a factory front oil cooler with the hard to find thermostat. many other little items... His car is really close to a GT... just with out the motor. brant |
Leather interiors.
The M471 was just a optioned out 914/6. All GT's started life at the factory as M471 option cars then where converted to GT later. The factory designated which M471 car would become a GT and asigned that vin number GT status. A car that was shipped to the US for GT conversion would have all GT under pinnings (brakes, suspension sway bars) But wouldnt receive the balsa wood and stiff kit crap until it was fully converted. There is a very significant difference in the regular M471 brakes and the GT brakes. I'll show you one day with pics. Herein lies the problem. Anybody who knew Chuck Stoddard, Art Bunker or Vasek Polak could order the GT parts if they owned a M471 car. If you'll notice, there is a lot more GT parts out there than there are GT cars that they came from. I think the engines where left wide open. You could just about order anything in your M471/GT car that Porsche had to offer. Brant, I have never seen a M471 car with the light lids (I'm up to 7 now) not saying it didnt happen, just that the parts where available for most people in the know to convert it. Jon Lowe, Glen Stazak and Llew Kinst have more info than me... B |
I was happy just owning a Factory 6, now I'm feeling all inadequate again.....:(

try this one on your wife."honey, lets take out a big home equity loan so i can by a real exspensive 914. don't worry about parts or repairs because it will sit in the garage all the time because it's too valuble to drive. oh, i'll need a new truck and a trailer too. ( insert whine) but it comes with all these exclusive options."
the wife, "is one of those options an attorney ?". kevin |
