Consider yourself lucky, i get a Ton of junk every day about being a "car guy" and that thats all i do every day. If something is related to a car they all look at me. It gets anoying, i have a friend that goes around telling everyone that i have a Porsche and they all think its a new car, How the he// would a 15 year old be able to afford a 40k car? then they think that my parents bought it, and they dont believe that i did, then i tell them i bought it for 1k and they think its a piece of junk. I hate getting junk like that from people younger than me, im the only one who has a car and only one other guy in my high school likes cars. well enough with my rant, sorry for the jabber, thanks for everything all....

Respect

Hell I get more thumbs up when I drive my sons cool blue teener than my 928. Of course that all changes at the turn of the key and a stomp on the gas of the V-8. Guess need to get my beast painted.
(beware of rant)
My son worked hard for his car too. I figured he has cut littorally miles of grass and painted three houses, laid 2000 sq ft of tile so forth and so on. His cool blue teener is paid for through his HARD work. He loves his car because he earned it!!! More than I can say about some kids that don't appreciate anything.

Last night I had the complete old 5-lug front suspension off my 914 sitting in the driveway while I hosing it down (sold it)

a couple of teenagers walked by and asked what kind of car I was working on...I told them a 914...one of them said cool car

The local NAPA auto store guy makes fun on my 911, calls it a "bug" everytime I go in there while driving it....I just laugh it off

Whats funny is that he has never made fun of my 914, i guess he has no idea what it is....

Had to contribute

Felt like I needed to contribute to this thread.

I have only been asked about my car from strangers a few of times. Sometimes they say, "Wasn't that car made by VW?" I just say, "Yeah, but the engine, suspension, and transmission are from a Porsche." I don't know how accurate that statement is or if one could argue those points, but it sure shuts 'em up!

Had a warm fuzzy the other day. On my way to work, flying down the interstate, a sled of a Mercedes pulls along side and waits for me to turn and look. When I did, he just pointed to the car and gave me a thumbs up! Made my 28 year old car drive like new for the last few miles to work.

I usually get very positive comments from people whenever I drive my 914. They are so rare around here that alot of younger people aren't even sure what kind of car it is. This is one of the reasons why I love these cars. A couple of months ago, I noticed a Boxster coming up behind me on the Interstate. I was wondering if he would even glance at my car as he passed. I was surprised when he slowed as he got closer and then pulled up alongside just to check it out and then gave me the thumbs up! That made my day.

Even though I don't drive my car yet, everyone I've showed it to is impressed. 90% of people here in Calgary, Canada have never seen this type of car before. I am very happy with it and get lots of satisfaction doing all of the custom/resto work. I have worked on my 914 almost every day for the last 3 months and can't wait to get it on the road. I will not care what other people think as the drive by in there ford escort with a huge wing and fake disc brake hub caps or civic with 6" exaust and spray paint white interior because I will know my car is a sports car! A PORSCHE!! Not a mid sized economy sedan.

I get the best laugh of my life readin this stuff. Don't get me wrong - it's all great stuff. To me, trying to convince someone of the virtues of a 914 is like trying to defend who I am. I've never been really into this love-affair with cars, but I have to admit that the 914 suits me better than any of the other 2-dozen cars I've had in my (almost 30) years of driving.

Like me its totally under-rated. Simple, yet functional. Likes the curves (and so do I). Practical, yet balls of fun! Unpretentious, yet occasionally unpredictable. There's just nothing like it. And I think thats true for each of us who appreciate that uniqueness about ourselves. Maybe others don't appreciate it - but that's their loss!

Andyrew,
You got nothin to worry about if your first car is a 914. That's what I hope to make available to each of my kids. Shoot, my first car was a Chevy Caprice 4-door with a 396. I would have traded that for a 914 any day of the week. I might have kept the 396 though to put in the 914 - whoa!

Enjoy!

Porsche Crest

One of the best commits and looks was in the parking lot while I was loading beer for our DE social, guy looks at me loading the front trunk and says " what the?? oh thats a Porsche, the engine is in the back, then just as he climbs into his beemer, I pop the back trunk and start loading the back trunk, he gets back out of his car and has to take a look, "were is the engine?", I told him in the middle.

My tweeker neighbor tried to pass himself off as a person who knew somthing about 914s. "Oh ya I ve worked on those before, you just need to do this and that, a little here there." I siad "realy, could ya give me a hand by takin a look at the engine?" He walked over to the car, and opened the rear trunk. I wish I had a polariod for the look on his face. He was too proud to ask where the engine was. He hasnt said anything since.

Most women look at a guys car and figure that he is compensating for something. If this assumption is correct then 914 owners must have the largest [censored] and [censored] on the road. Hell I wouldnt want to get into a bar fight with one

Unhappy

All this doting over 914s is making me miss mine. I'll have to finish up the engine this weekend. If only I could work it out to have infinite money and infinite time. Yeah, that'd be good.

I just have to question why a Lotus Europa can have a Renault or a Ford powerplant and it is still Just a Lotus. Nobody gives those guys any crap. I can just hear it "Hey dude, look its a Lotus." Buddies reply "That's not a real Lotus. There is a Renault engine in there." Yup I can just hear it, but I never do. Look at all the joint ventures and companies that have consumed companies. No that isn't a Lambo, Chrysler owns them now(This from the days when they were owned by them). Nobody had a problem. I've had all kinds of people, people who could care less about cars, people didn't know how to change a tire, OLD LADIES for heaven sake go out of there way to tell me what my car really is. I KNOW IT HAS A VOLKSWAGON ENGINE IN THERE! That's the way I like it. I used to be obsessed with the bug for a four year stint until I found the perfect car. Yup the VW 914. I really wish the VW croud would embrace us. They're good people. And the Magazine coverage that is so long over due. Then again maybe I don't. Then the prices would go the way the Karmann Ghia convertable and the Notchback did. Yikes, Bad Idea. Forget I even said that. I would like the parts prices the VW have though. Just think If VW was the only marketer of this car. Yeah I can see it, the VW engineered by Porsche. Yes sir that would have been a whole different story. We would be here saying I wish I could afford one of those mid-engined VolksWagons, but there so darn expensive. Everyone would want one. Well, maybe not everyone. Just those with good taste HEHEHE. Sorry to rant so long. I just had to get that of of my chest. I feel better now.

Baskin and Robins makes Chocolate, Vanilla and 29 other flavors of ice cream because people like choices.

For 20 years, hearing comments about 914s one gets used to the rhetoric. However, installing a 3.2 motor into a 914 seems to quite most of those remarks .

There was no lotus engine at all until the esprit/eclat/elite. The early loti mostly had fords or coventry climax or renault (europa). The 'classic' lotus twin cam engine is a ford kent block with Lotus head. 90% of the europa parts are from pedestrain (ha ha) english cars of the period. Same is true of the seven, and the elan. The later lotus excel had tons of toyota parts, the lotus elise (IIRC) has a tuned Ford Zetec, the shelby cobra had a lowly Ford pushrod V8. All europas and esprits had either renault or citroen transmissions, the Maserati Merak had a citroen engine, The Bricklin had AMC or Ford engines, the pantera a ford 351 engine, the Jensen interceptor a Chrysler 440, the Ferrari Dino 246 was built by Fiat, the early Volvo P1800s were built by Jensen in England and on and on and on and yawn.

Just ignore the goofs.

I love all those cars and yes they are all real(I have a soft spot for Europas. So is the 914. Maybe it's better that so many people are so ignorant. Less competition for the rest of us for the ones in good condition. Maybe next time someone says NARP, I will ask them to defign a real porsche. Is a 924 a real porsche. You know with the AUTI/Pacer motor and all. I say of course it is. Maybe I will just say WHO CARES I LOVE IT THE WAY IT IS PERIOD. Now show me your cool car 97 Civic. Oh wow, don't see many of those. Wink wink. Sorry for ranting once again, but I've just been badgered so much over this.
