Question Transmission Sealing

I have a 1975 Porsche 914 that is having Cluch and Transmision problems. I have removed the trans from the car and want to fix the problem of shifting into First gear. At this time it grinds everytime you shift into First gear and I figured since I have the trans on the ground might as well fix this. I have taken the rear cover off but I can't seem to get the intermediat plate all the way out. It seems to bind up just after the plate clears the studs.

Can someone point me as to what mght be causing this? I need to seperate this to replace out the seals while I'm replacing out the syncros and dog teeth.

Thanks Ron,

See the "fixing the first gear synchro" article in the 914 Tech Articles section of this very website.

Also check out Red-Beard's tranny rebuild article:

He PM'd me. To get the gear stack to slide out, you need to engage the tranny into 5th gear. Easiest way is to tap the 4th/5th gear shiftrod into the intermediate plate. I usually use a hammer and a 3/8 ratchet extension, since it's the "Right size". It does not require much force. Just tap.

Thanks Intermediate plate is now out

Hi James,
Last night I was able to finally get the gears out of the case. It did take a little persuasion with a pry bars. The Trans was in 5th but still was very tight getting the slider past the upper part of the case. But it is out and now I can start checking to see all what needs to be replaced. The gears and Synchos seem to be in good condition other than First gear( I knew they where gone). I have downloaded your article on how to rebuild a 901 tyranny and will study it before tearing the tyranny further apart. I think I will not have to replace any more synchros so just want to get everything lined backup and resealed.
There was a small peace that fell out that I need to figure where it came from. It is a small 3/8 long peace that has rounded ends, looks like a ball bearing but none of the bearings are missing a ball. I hope it turns out to be a shifting indent holder.

Thanks Again

Have you removed any of the shift rods?

There are a series of balls and rounded "things" with springs which are in the intermediate plate. They have to be re-installed as you re-install the shift rods.

They are what keeps each shiftrods in "neutral" when you are in other gears.
