Look what I found!

1973 2.0L NO RUST! Word of mouth sale, appearance package, four bolt Fuchs(plus spare), center console, original drivetrain, all numbers match, 117k miles, great interior, a couple of dings here and there, major exterior paint problem(factory recall silver) but really straight body. Steering rack, brake pedal and clutch feel good.
PO sez the car was running well when parked in 2005. Engine, clutch, tranny, gauges, electronics, heat/defrost and all lights were working when parked. I couldn't verify any of this because I didn't want to start the motor after such a long pause. All looked good inside the cockpit even though both the brake and accelerator pedal stayed down. Both will have to be addressed.
Obvious oil leaks underneath but not a huge puddle on the floor.
Couldn't resist the rust free aspect and bought it for ? You tell me what it's worth!

Comments, appraisals and tech info greatly appreciated, Cheers!

A clean '73 2.0 with the appearance group? If you paid anything under $7500 I am pretty jealous.

Trust me, he paid less than that. How much less I haven't been given permission to say.

Were we under directive to not disclose how much was paid for this car? It was a steal of a deal. Not quite the deal like the pair for $250 up in Portland, but close.

Ok guys, I'll let the cat out. Wait for it......$2000. Yep, 2000 US dollars.

A contractor/client of mine were talking about P-cars a few days ago and he said, "My neighbor has had an old 914 in his garage for fifteen years, never drives it. I think he wants to sell it soon". "Could you give me his phone number?" I said, with a bit of interest. The rest is history, I bought it four days later while rubbing my hands with glee.

I think the five Fuchs are probably worth $1,500 let alone the car.

So. My plan is to bring it back to factory stock condition and keep it living for many more years as a fair weather driver. I'll drop the motor and look around but right now I think I might have to clean out the tank, check the electrics and fire it up!

I'd still like some guesses at it's value, bring it on!

Still not running, no spark and maybe no fuel. Hard to tell at this point. The new battery is cranking the motor but that's it. I pulled the dist cap and cleaned all the points of contact, they were corroded but the assembly looked good, almost new when parked. I'll replace the coil and see what happens, after that I'll have to dig into the F.I. system. It's been sitting for so long, all the vacuum hoses are old and a lot of the rubber on the car is toast.

Still, I am so stoked about this car. I found the original rear tow hook today under the right side headlight and noticed that the spare tire is an original German Continental. I didn't know this, but the spare tire feeds air pressure to the windshield washer fluid system. And it's all intact!

Just need to get the car running so I can test all electrical, transmission and brake systems, etc.

Then, disassemble, paint, rebuild, assemble, drive, EASY! Just like television!

I think these guys are all BS'ing you. That car is a death trap and probably haunted. You should rid yourself of it as soon as you can....I'll give you $100. Ill probably regret it too.

I got my 73 2.0 for free and totally regret it....

Truly nice find, I wouldn't have my 914 if it weren't for a find like this.

Welcome to the obsession.

It is a really good one getting harder to find, pull the motor and clean up the injection system, new fuel hoses, vacuum lines ,ignition, etc, you may find its pushrod tube seals and RMS and you will be set to go with no more leaks?
Clean out the fuel tank flash it up and drive?? not really but you have an excellent start and you will get there, well done.

that car has a lot of rust for "no rust" you must be wearing your rust proof eyeglasses to see no rust on this car. both trunks have rust, and there appears to be rust near the battery tray, which is painted black along with some of the inner fender wall in the engine bay, indicating that there may have been rust repair done near the battery area. The batter tray and engine bay should be painted body color, not black in the case of a silver car.

You cant examine the "hell hole" properly with battery and ecu installed, remove them items and give the hell hole a complete inspection, that black paint is a warning sign. I have seen hell holes repaired with riveted on metal, bondo'ed over and painted to look good, but in reality was not a good repair. you need to take a close exam of this area to be sure it was not simply patched over. The black paint is a sign things may have been worked on rust wise on your car.

have fun

Thanks for the warning Cabinet. That's why I posted this, to find stuff out. I will be dropping the motor and giving the hell hole a serious scrutinizing. Documentation says that the tray was "repaired" when the last battery was installed so, yes, something going on there. But below the tray looks rust free still, and the suspension is fine.
As for the trunk and other bits, the pictures I posted were before any cleaning was done. What looks like rust was just brown water spots that wiped away. I'll post some better pix once I strip the car. I'll also take some snappies of the tub and suspension bits from underneath. I found the tow hook under the passenger side headlight too. The only interior fix will be the driver seat but I think that's just some re-stitching, not sure. The dash has no cracks and the targa top looks and works like new. Cheers!
