Best way to test starter while engine's out?
 

Fresh engine, clutch, battery & SVDA Distributor.

Mated with trans and ready to re-install, and as I also replaced the worn out ignition switch, figured I check starting system before buttoning everything in for good.

Rolled engine and trans in to place close enough to hook up batt & all electrics to
check it turns over. Which it doesn't. Everything powers up, but no starter action.

Before I unhook everything and roll eng/trans back in garage, going to make sure
there's voltage to the yellow wire on starter solenoid when key's turned to 'crank'.

Right?

If so, where to next? Have made sure everything's hot, good grounds all around.

Easier to just pull starter and have it tested?

Take it to FLAPS to test under load.

Sure you can slap 12V to it and a ground and it will spin but not tell you if it makes enought torque to roll the motor over.

Oh I see you what missed. ground strap from transaxle to body

You need decent voltage on the yellow wire when the key is in the "start" position.

You need a good connection from the battery (+) post to the (+) post on the starter.

You need a good connection from the battery (-) post to the case of the starter. This is a complicated path, and small problems at each step of the way can add up. The path goes:
- Starter case
- Transmission case
- Transmission ground strap
- Rear trunk floor
- Chassis sheetmetal to side of engine bay
- Battery ground strap
- Battery ground post

Make sure that path is good.
