Everyone has been reall helpfull..THanks alot. But now that I have the engine out of the car I have some more questions.
The Type stamp on te motor is 911/82 and the serial # is 6462112. What I have learned from you guys already is it is from a 1976 911S its 2.7 USA-49 state had CIS FI. Now here are my questions 1. How do I know if it has the stock cams installed ? The marks on the driverside cam is 901 16800 and on the pass side cam it is 01. 2. there apears to be a temps sensor in the timing chain cover on the passenger side... what is it really and what was it for? 3. the timing marks on the crank pulley are identified in the 911 haynes manual as 30 35 Degrees ATDC...when infack the rotation of the engine as viewed through a hole in the firewall is clockwise..and the 30 and 35 degree marks come before TDC..what gives is the book wrong or am I missing something? Help please.. clr2cont 1976 914 2.0 1970 914-6 2.7 www.clr2cont.com

#2: Ha! I asked that very question on the 911 side just a month or so ago when I was installing the pressure fed tensioner update on mine. The answer is it's a thermo-time switch sensor for the CIS injection.
#1: Uh, no idea. I'd love to know the answer, though. #3: Hmmm. I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. They must have reversed their picture somehow(?) and rewritten the caption to match. You *should* have a Z1 (for TDC), a mark mark about 5mm *before* that (as you turn the crank clockwise) for 5 degrees BTDC, and a couple marks about 25mm and 30mm before that for 30 degrees BTDC and 35 degrees BTDC... or maybe they just totally blew the picture and caption altogether? I'd lioke to know what the "FE" mark is for, myself. ...uh, short answer: the book is wrong and you are right. ===== So, how big of a hole did you make? What about the marks on your flywheel, didn't they match? I found Wayne's book (101 Projects) really helpfull during my work (Wayne's book, Haynes 911, Clymer, and the Pelican site were all of the references I used) Be sure to have the alternator checked while the engine is out of the car. And be sure to check the seal on the oil temp sender...I must not have tightened mine enough or something, since it's now leaking (and a PITA to get to with the engine in the car). It'll just have to wait until I take the engine out again for a cam upgrade. Good luck! Get the engine done, back in the car, and drive! Just a WAG, but since the CIS won't run with cams with much overlap, yours would prolly be stock or pretty damn close, if reground. The only aftermarket grind I know of is the Webcam 20/21 or sumthin like that.

Glad to here these are probably stock cams..thanks for the info.
The hole I made in the firewall is about 1 3/4 " in dia. just big enough to shine the strobe light through it and peek aound the light. The marks on the flywheel do somewhat match..but for someone unfamiliar with the motor I need a good initial reference... clr2cont

Another way to guess if the stock cam is in it is to look at the rest of the engine. If the engine looks bone stock.... no pop off valve, early tensioners, early valve covers etc then it most likely is stock. It is very rare that somone would go to the trouble of installing S cams or better pistons and then do nothing else on the car. Porsche people tend to want to upgrade everything.
I bought a junkyard SC engine one time with good hopes. it had pressure fed tensioners, 930 valve covers, a pop off valve, heetsheets.... My thought was somone loved this engine at one time and took care of it (maybe). i took it all apart and found 964 cams, big oil pump, 3.2L pistons and a few other nice little things. Nice score for $3000.
