help weird speedo problem

anyone have any idea of whats going on.
I slip in a freshly repaired speedo from NH speedos, one that I can manually verify to be good using a drill in reverse and both speedo and odo are functional

once in the car, a 914 2.0, its a no go on both
with the speedo out,I can see the cable spinning when driving and I cannot hold it with
my leatherman pliers, so cable appears to spinning even under load.

I try 2 more speedos I have that I know and test to be good...still no go....so what the heck?
I'm stumped!

Have you replaced the speedo drive recently? If so, you may have replaced it with a 911/912 one which spins the opposite direction and therefore will not give you a reading. I had the exact reverse situation. Was sold a 914 drive instead of a 911 one.

thanks Kiwi, I did indeed replace the original leaky drive with one from a 911, will have to see if that will solve it

Correct speedo drive

Check the direction - clockwise or anticlockwise - that the cable spins when your 914 is in motion. I bet it's spinning anticlockwise as viewed sitting in the drivers seat. If so you need a 914 speedo drive and it just happens I have one I can sell you for $50.

well it was indeed the 911 angle drive that was the problem, not spinning in the right direction.
I know I have a spare somewhere but if I fail to locate one I will drop you a line Kiwi. thanks again

You can also try Mark at Original Customs in Napa, CA. He makes a dual O ring drive that works better than the original.

Mark's mod addresses the leak between the barrel of the drive and the case, where wear often occurs. Unless you replace the inner seals as well, the leaks there will continue.
