Question How much your 914 weights ??

My 71 914 street car was weighted yesterday. The front axle load was 420 kg and the rear axle load was 550 kg. There were no spare wheel and the tank was nearly empty.

I have 3.0L six with webers and front mounted oil cooler. The bumpers are glass fiber in front and rear.

The total weight is 970 kg. What do you think, is it a lot or a little ?? Any comments ?? Any other numbers ??

410 Kilograms = 904 Pounds
550 Kilograms = 1213 Pounds
970 Kilograms = 2138 Pounds

Hey Timo,

My teener is registered as 960kg
It has been weighed when it was imported from Germany
At this time, the car had a 2.4, steel flares and fibreglass 916 bumpers

Cheers,

Jeroen

Sounds about the middle of the range. Mine probably weighs close to 2300 lbs with the 3.2, I've not made any specific efforts for weight reduction. I've heard of some race prepped teeners in the 1700 lb range, maybe Brad could fill us in...

I would gues my -6 would be about the same. Which has me wonder, is the front too light?

Would keeping the tire in front help? Currently, I have slight over steer, so I doubt the extra 40 pounds in front would improve matters.

So should 914timo add the spare back in the trunk??

Randy, if your -6 has the original engine, your car might be a bit lighter. When I had mine corner balanced, the front to rear ratio came out to 43:57, and that was with spare, oil cooler, and battery in the front trunk (and 3/4 tank gas and 200 lb in driver seat). Guess you'll only know for sure if you check the corner weights.

I know a 2.0+ four-banger 914 racer that weighs in at something like 1450 lbs. Wet--no driver. Scary scary scary!

My car, last I checked, was right under 2000 lbs with no driver, no spare tire, no roof, and just about no gas. I think... Maybe it was just over? It's been quite a while.

Mine is not the original engine, its a 2.7 but I have the exta oil cooler mounted to underside of trunk so, I suspect I don't have enough weight up front. Although, if I was light up front, wouldn't I be getting understeer? I have sway bars front and back, and alignment is neutral. Maybe I could get more cornering by getting weight up front and aligning toe out?

Randy, if your tail is stepping out in the corners, try tightening up your FRONT sway bar a notch or two. Also, with that 2.7, make sure you're squeezing, not stomping on the throttle as you apex. Change one thing at a time, though, so you know which did the trick. Also, how old are your tires?

Thanks. tires are brand new, Yoko race tires. I am SOOO easy on the throttle. You are right about the sway bar though. Since I have that to play with, I should start there before I think about shifting weight around.

Mine is somewhere around 1,650 lbs, f/g hoods, front fenders, and passenger door. My goal is 1,500 lbs (or less) which will happen when I remove the windshield, roof, and install f/g rear fenders and drivers door.
