the Series 1 (S1) Elise were not really street legal in the US. That silver one is mine (in Hong Kong), but I believe there are a few S1 Elise in the US (for track use only), but i m not sure how much they go for in the US; out here its about 20to30k usd. (FYI, S1 Elise uses Rover engine; whereas the newer Elise uses Toyota engines).

There were some S1 cars that were converted to use Honda VTEC engines and legally imported to the US.

Got a ride in an Elise with an S2000 motor. It was a beast. Elise is going to cost you plenty, prices heading back up.
As far as cars that were available in 1970, 914 is head and shoulders above anything close to its price. There was a guy running DM I think in a 914 last time I went autocrossing. Less than a ton with big sticky Hoosiers, he was fast, fast fast. Sounded like an angry chainsaw. Big four out back. |
The early Lotuses were available in the 70s, and they definitely give the stock 914 a run for its handling money.
