914-6 exhaust color
I'm finally getting around to the restoration of my sixer. I've had it since '81! Truth be told, it hasn't run since 2000 :( What I'm requesting is pictures, info. and/or opinions on ceramic coating my original exhaust system. What color were they originally painted?

originality ???
1. back-in-the-day exhaust parts were not "painted" at all
2. they were definitely not ceramic coated - so if perfect originality is the objective, just sand blast what you have back to it's base metal "color" and go on with life - it will soon enuf correct itself to a correct rusty-burned patina if you ever deign to drive the car . . |
Trust me, the exhaust parts came painted from the factory. A kind of flat silver grey. You can buy it in cans at welding supply houses.
The Cap'n |
The Cap'n is correct as usual. They were a flat gray-ish color from the factory. I believe if I were going to run my original heat exchangers I would consider ceramic coating them as close to that original color as possible.

I would as well--they are expensive enough that I would want to try to preserve them as well as possible, and ceramic coating is at least a step in the right direction.

I used VHT high temp exhaust flat grey, looks factory...

They may still list it but a haven't checked, don't expect you would get the right match with ceramic goating but you never know. |
