Transmission woes

Have a rescue 914 that I have been bringing back to live over the last year. Thought I finally had it to the point of taking in to get an inspection done, and get it back on the road. So I went thru a final check list and discovered that the transmission seemed to have little or no fluid in it. I filled it up, and decided to take it for one last quick spin around our local road to confirm everything was good. It was pretty much impossible to shift into 2nd without much grinding of teeth. It had been ok prior to filling it, but ai suspected that it was actually completely dry, and that was actually making the worn out sun cross work well even to make it appear that it was ok. With the lubricant in it, and the added slippyness, the real state of affairs was revealed. So inspection cancelled, I proceeded to use the article on line here, to pull the gear cluster and rebuild/replace as required. Almost a month later after waiting for par,to, I finally put it back together.

So now it does not grind, but it also feels like the shifter is moving thru toffee. Is is sticky and there is significant resistance to getting it into any gear. It almost feels like something is binding. But the shifter is fine, disconnected it moves back and forth with no effort, so it must be something in the actual transmission. Any thoughts? I had the shift rod template to align everything, I replaced a couple of synchro rings, one set of dog teeth and all the brake bands etc on second gear. When the cluster was out, I could snap the gears into each shift position. Here was definitively some resistance both going in, and out, but I could do it with my fingers, so it wasn't significant.

Any ideas on what could be going on here?

Jump over to 914World.com and send DrEvil a message. He is the 901 guru and rebuilds these all of the time. He did the transaxle on my Six.
