Chris Campbell the streaming videos are ready

I have four large MPEG files ready to FTP you so we can try the streaming video idea of my in-car camera footage. They are large, 200MB to 300MB each. Email me at my home address when you can get me a FTP address, etc and I'll send them to you. They should provide great entertainment for all the Pelican Heads at lunch time. jrrogers@cox.net

Share the wealth, eh? If we can get some good videos together I could put together a DVD for us. Wouldn't be too much trouble to burn copies for the cost of DVDs and shipping. Maybe some racing footage, some driving footage, etc. Get creative. Anyone want to see this project get big?

Hi Guys,

Here is a link to my "incoming" video folder. John Roger's fresh in-car 914 race footage are the 4 files starting with 914_JRogers...

http://www.nosubstitute.org/video/new

Here are direct links. Depending on your computer, you may be able to stream these (they are mpegs) by just clicking the link, or you may need to right-click and use your "save as" option. Note: these files are BIG! Don't even think about it if you're on dial-up.

Las Vegas practice race 210MB
Las Vegas timed session 200MB
Las Vegas trophy race 195MB
HSR Willow Springs (10/02) 300MB

Mark - I have a massive collection of automotive digital videos, many of them Porsche and Ferrari related. (Somewhere around 530 clips, almost 6GB total.) I'd be glad to chip in my 20-30 "favorites" but I'm not equipped for DVD burning or serious video editing. Lemme know if somebody wants to take that on.

I downloaded the 195 MB Las Vegas video and the colors are all wacky. Is that how the original video is? I tried it on two computers (Mac OS X and Windows 2000) same thing. Looks like a great video from what I can see through the haze.

The bigest problem with the LV road course is lack of color. Most everything is a greyish-brown including the pavement which makes it really hard to see unless you have a yellow face shield. The colors in the Willow Springs video are better. Also it could be the CODEC that you are using as I have ATI's video system and used their CODEC. I tested the videos on a DELL and a Compaq and they looked pretty good.

chrisreale,

FTP is not so much a site as it is a protocol for accessing sites on the internet. Its as old as the internet. Stands for File Transfer Protocol. There are two primary modes of transfer ASCII (for text data) and Binary (for everything else). Its very useful for large amounts of data that won't transfer easily across email servers.

Did you know that you're Windows networking includes an FTP tool - no need to buy third-party software. Look in the Windows help file for FTP. If its not there, just check in the Windows directory for a file - ftp.exe. Double-click to open in a DOS shell. Using the "?" with ENTER will provide you with a list of commands.

Enjoy.

I thought Chris was joking (from the smiley) otherwise I woulda 'splained that

Funny how a ton of people (basically 100% of AOL users, LOL) think the "internet" is a new thing. And UN*X for that matter. They have been around as long as our 914s. Even the good 'ol WWW (HTTP & HTML) is coming up on 10 yrs old IIRC.

For some nostaligia check this out - http://www.ietf.org/iesg/1rfc_index.txt

I actually haven't even watched the vids myself yet; they are on a box at my office and I haven't been there much lately.

That sort of image is due to a couple of possible factors: 1st it could be due to a dropping of frames when you play back the video. This can be from a combination of slow harddrive, low memory for video usage and possibly a slow CPU. 2nd it could be from a video card that is trying to use the CODEC that was used to make the video but is not able to translate it fully. The CODEC I used was for video CDs or VCD file generation. If you can play a DVD or VCD with no problems than I'll look at some other things. I currently have a 2.4 GHZ P4 CPU, 512MB RAM, an ATI video card with 128MB of memory and a 100GB fast IDE drive used with it's own controller just for video. I had a 900 MHZ machine and when I tried digitizing video it was terribly lacking. One thing you can do is reduce the size of the image to about 3x4 inches or so and see if that clears it up? Good luck.

John ,what motor are you running in your 914? It sounded to me like a nice beefy six? I did notice that in practice you were passed by a few cars (including a 356) .Do you have a horsepower disadvantage? The driving looked nice and smooth.
Cheers

I have a 2.4l four in the car, pretty much stock. The 356 that passed me is Les Long from Idaho and he is running a 1900cc roller bearing engine in a 1600 pound car. Actually he passes most everybody, except for a couple of the 220HP 911s or 914/6 cars. But he blows up regularly too as whitnessed at the CA Speedway event he used TWO engines! He is in a different class than I am as HSR has 4 classes in the Porsche group: 356, 914/912, 911-6 and 914-6 so that is why you see a range of speed. Glad you enjoyed the videos.

Oh yeah, John I enjoyed the vids....d/loading the second one now, trouble is, its only at 23kbs. Last night I only had 4.6kbs so its an improvement. Still they are pretty large files. Great to see some 914 track footage. The only other video i've seen i d/loaded of a german 914club webpage.
Do you have any specs (HP?)and pics of your 914 John?
Cheers

For more details on my car you can checkout the article on the PP site here on how I go vintage racing in the tech articles section. In actuality, we think my engine has about 200HP or so as it isn't really stock. The biggest factor is the weight as the car weighs 2278 pounds and the class minimum is actually 1800 which most cars are right at so I give up some there but I like having the interior as it makes it a little more "civilized".
