Installing a CD Player
 

I bought a CD player today, and have it installed, but no wires hooked up yet. The intenna wire (male plug) doesn't reach the intenna jack on the cd player. Can I just go to Radio shack and get an extention? Also, because the original radio had two, two pronged plugs that hooked to the deck for the speakers, should I just clip it off and twist the new wires together, or should I just replace the speaker wire totally? Also, what did you do to secure the new deck? I filed the opening on the dash a little in tyhe corners so the mounting insert would fit, and there is a clasp in the rear attached to the fire wall that hold the deck, but nothing is really bolted down. Should i plan on doing some drilling to make a secure support?

I got my extension at radio shack. They aren't very expensive. As for the speaker wires, if they were good the last time they were used then I wouldn't replace them. Also, the mounting bracket that attaches to the firewall should be enough to hold the unit tight unless there were directions indicating that holes should be drilled to afix the unit in the front

use caution if drilling towards the gas tank. i seem to remember a contributor here managing to put a new outlet in his tank while installing a music source.

I whole heartedly agree. I was going to buy this 914 and kept smelling gas. The guy said he poked a hole in the tank when installing the stereo. He said it's be ok as long as you kept the gas below 3/4's!.... Ya, Right!:eek:

I have been installing stereos for years. There are a few important simple things to do when installing a stereo to get the best sound. Your speakers should all be hooked up in the right phase, this meens positive from the stereo needs to be hooked up to the positive from the speaker and negative to negative. If one speaker is hooked up out of phase it will be pulling air in while the other speaker is pushing air out. This will result in the sound being washed out in even the most simple stereo. To test this hook up one speaker and play some music, hook up the other speaker both ways when the music is playing and you will be able to hear which is the right way from the the sound.
Also, when you install a new cd player, the mounting insert will have some triangle or rectangle cut outs near the front. Put the mounting insert in the hole and bend these triangles over so that they wedge against the backside of the dash. this will hold the stereo in very well. Radio shack or walmart will have extentions for the antena in many lengths. Hope my long story will help you enjoy your new CD player!! Dave

Thanks for the replies. I wont do any drilling. I installed a hood badge the other day, and had a hard enough time drilling into the minty, perfect hood! I made sure I folded over the tabs. I will head to fadio shack in the next few days to get an adapter. Thanks again, Chris
