Chris Farley Super header question

These look mighty fine! Is the only way to muffle these headers is to use his quiet can silencer? Or can you order a header that goes straight back to the exhaust hanger and hook up a Bursch, Triad or Mittelmoter exhaust?

Help me out (along with others).. show me a pic or tell me who Chris Farley is ??

Are you talking about the Pete Weber setup that Tangerine racing sells ??

I believe his name is Chris Foley...Chris Farley is that "big" dude from SNL who died a while back...

Hard to imagine how you would use a 2-in, 1-out street muffler with a 4->1 header collector design. You can most likely fab a nice street or race exhaust for $100-200 though, using your preferred "turbo" style (welded) muffler like a Flowmaster or whatnot.

According to the dyno testing on ShopTalkForums, that is the exhaust system to get. It does come without the muffler system, but those mufflers (both) are supposed to make it streetable quiet without any real restriction. For prices check out:
http://www.tangerineracing.com/Super_Header.htm
and look at the bottom of the page. The left-most column is the mufflerless one.

My apologies for botching the name. Yes, I am talking about Tangerine Racing.

Chris Farley is that motivational speaker that lives in a 914...down by the river!

Hey Chris,

You can use any muffler you want with my header. It would be easy to adapt any popular aftermarket generic silencer that will fit behind the transmission (not the Bursch, Mittelmotor, or Triad - that fit up to the stock exhaust). The header has a single outlet that terminates at the left side, facing right, behind the tranny. The mufflers I sell are pricey, but it is impossible to match their performance, IMO. Just using the Phase 9 silencer with my system makes the engine a bit too loud for most people for street use. By adding the Quiet Can, the sound is reduced to a level acceptable for long distance travel.

Brad,

Pete stopped making these almost five years ago, when I bought his parts inventory and tooling. He still makes the six cylinder systems AFAIK, and he still makes the Phase 9 silencers.
The design dates back to the Garretson days. It was developed by Bill Beekhuis, Bruce Anderson, Jerry Woods and Mike Stimson in the early 80's I believe.

His 914 rotted out so he put the engine in a microbus (van). :D

Brad Roberts 10-17-2002 11:58 AM

Yep Chris,

I know the full story on your header setup. Mike Stimson does all of our head work on the FP 914's.

I have a used "Tangerine Racing header" if anybody wants one for half of new cost.. with the "Phaze9".
