SawZall party (live update)

We just started. It appears most of those who contacted Mke will get their parts.

Sorry, B--but I don't think I can leave that one...

LB has his front clip.

You've got to be kidding me, do you know how nice it would be to have a 914 that rust free to start with. Here in the mid-coast (aka the rust belt) that car would be a gem. This is what I call a keeper.
Oh well, it still looks like fun!

We offer these cars up all the time (for free or couple of 100$).

The midwest/east coast people would rather spend months and months repairing all their rust instead of paying 800$ to have a decent chassis shipped to them.

Personally.. my time is money. I want the car on the road or track ASAP.

Brad, Is the bottom of the front trunk spoken for? My car could use a new one welded in as the DPO cut it out from underneath to unlock the trunk then did the worst welding job to install a patch.

Well, it's still a shame, no matter what your time is worth. The longitudinals look completely rust free. Eat your heart out NE and Eastern guys. This is what crazy Californians do 'cause they are so spoiled with nice cars all the time. Up there where Brad is, and down here in SoCal, we see 914s on the road all the time. Athough not as common as Ferraris, Lambos and such.

Geoff,

Two of these where spoken for, but I have a third front clip that needs to be cut. Let me see if we can get the 2nd and 3rd car cut this week.

Milt,

The only rust this chassis had was in the passenger side control arm ear. It had been hit in the left rear and repaired poorly. They replaced the left rear fender and didnt quite get it right.

The floors are perfect.

Remember Milt, I'm from Texas where I built several 914's. I did lots of rust repair back then... I'm not jaded with all the cherry 914's running around... I'm just tired of running adds for cars (so I dont have to cut them) and not getting any response until I cut them.

Hmm,

I have three rusty 914's, two are 2.0l Special Editions with tons of parts.

Good argument for shipping Brad. I'll be in touch (as long as the rollers look like the SAWZALL victim!).

Fin,

I have a white/pr 1974 LE chassis that you could bring back to life with just one of your parts cars. It has had minor front end damage (most people wouldnt notice it had any issues in the past, they just didnt have it repaired to my liking) but it has original paint and NO frame or floor rust. It wont sell. I will strip it and make it a roller for you (leave the glass and complete doors) for an even 1k. Plug in your pieces and be in the road by Jan. or have it painted..

Thanks for your help today DD. You'll be a pro with the sawzall in no time. Next we will go through the basics of using the plasma cutter.

I rest my case. Sorry poeple don't respond to your ads. I know it's a hassle. Over a year ago, you responded to a WTB ad that I had about a race car candidate. You had one with one of your cages already in for $500. IIRC, it would even roll around on its own tires. But, like a lot of folks, I couldn't see how to come get it and I didn't want to buy it and have it shipped sight unseen. So I bought a local car that was not near as nice as the one you just cut up. Needless to say, I am now a quasi expert on rust repair.

Listen up people! Don't buy these cars that show a lot of rust. (If they SHOW a lot of rust, they have a lot more that you can't see.) It is easier to transfer the good parts over to a good chassis than it is to fix up a poor chassis. Especially if it's a track car where you have to put in a cage and take apart the suspension anyway. Or if you're gonna strip it for a repaint.

I speak from experience.

Milt,

That car went to a good home and will see the track again some day.

I get lots of email grief from people about making the cars into race cars and cutting them up. I would like to plant my foot up ever persons ass who "goes off". I wish I had a place for every 914 that came through my hands, but I dont, and I never will.

Food for thought: almost twice as many 914's where produced over a six year period as there where Boxsters produced over the same amount of time (6 years). We have a lot left.

I didn't even see that ponytailed guy in the pictures! Is he using a sawall or a torch?

Brad, let me know when you have a good floor I can have, as it will be my winter project.

Nise pics B. I forgot to send Mikey a shot, but yours will work nicely. I need the section circled in red. I can pick it up a week from Monday if you can still work it out. I need pieces of it and the jacked up ear doesn't bother me. Still have that section?

What I want to know is how everyone is posting the pictures on this site. I took a sawsall picture myself today. I was going to post it here to join in the fun but I can't figure out how to attach it. I saved the picture on my hard drive as a JPG. I clicked on the browse tab on the message page. I located myJPG and attempted to attach the file. I get a message that states the file is too big. Am I attampting the attach me whole C drive? How about if I mail it to you guy's and you can post it for me. Computers... Give me a body grinder and a paint gun and I'll sculp you a computer. Just don't ask me to run the dam thing.

Rich -

Wayne & folks have a size limit on their pic hosting. To get around this, you can host your pics somewhere else (your own web site for example) and then link to them. Folks on dial-up connections will hate you though if you post 400-800K pics regularly.

The other way is to reduce the filesize. JPEG is a lossy compression method and one easy way is to simply crank-up the compression rate. Most graphics pgms have a "quality" setting, often shown in a % scale, when you save the pic file. Try stepping down from 80-70-60-50% and you'll get it to a size Pelican likes.

Also you can reduce the dimensions. Many digicams spew out 1600x1200 or bigger, but for web posting 640x480 or even 320x240 is usually fine.

Lastly, you can reduce the # of colors (palette size). Going from 24 or 32-bit (millions) of colors to a smaller number makes a big diff.

There are various free and cheap pgms that can do this stuff. For Windows, Paint Shop Pro is a good one; others are Thumbsplus, Irfanview; even the built-in XP picture editor isn't bad.

I use Adobe Photoshop and ThumbsPlus, mostly.
