Does anyone have expoerience with EFI systems on 914 4cyl??(Haltech, Motec..)
Hello,
Looking for any input on prices and programability of a haltech or motec system used on 4 cyl. 914 engine... Thanks, ROn |
I choose Autronic from aircooled.net, it's fully mappable, and the only one with a real auto tune feature.....It comes from Australia.
|
No personal experience, but I know that most of the systems are way spendy and probably "illogical" for a Type4 application. Autronic and Megasquirt are probably your best bets. Motec, TEC-III (Electromotive), Haltech and so forth would be $thousands...kind of a stretch for a normal Type4 buildup, in the bang-for-the-buck department. If your goal is to build some kind of $20,000 monster race motor, then maybe it's a different story.

Autronic will cost atleast 2800 bucks according to Plenum choice,IR set up, fuel pump used, injectors and etc..you'll spend 3K before it ever fires up with any good system. For that I can buy a few 48IDAS.

HUm..
I have a Autronic in front of me. The software SUCKS. The system does what I want it to do.. but my GOD man.. get some software designers and come up to speed with everybody else. Something that is being missed here: Support. Motec shows up to almost all the PCA club races and every tuner I know uses it... this means that I have support when I need it. I show up with Electromotive and I ask for some help.. I'm laughed at. Haltech ...who ?? I have a system I'll sell you for 500$ (support sucks, but the system works well..again the interface software is not friendly) Oh.. and dont give me this online support crap from all the different lists... it does NO good when your at the track or stuck on the side of the road...lol B |
Never had a problem with autronics software, it's simpler to me than any of the rest..
As for support, they may be in Australia but I get all the help I need with a phone call. |
If it's a stock motor, there is no advantage in going with an aftermarket FI system over D-Jetronic. Even the "cheap" solutions (e.g. Megasquirt) aren't better, as the fitting is difficult and the tuning process requires significant ($$) dyno time to get the mapping done correctly.
Even if your motor is non-stock, modifying the D-Jet system to handle it is possible. The mixture as a function of load is adjustable in all load ranges (via the MPS). The mixture as a function of engine speed (VE) can be changed by modifying the speed control waveform generators in the ECU. Even low-boost turbocharging can be handled by modifying the vent port section of the MPS. See my web site for D-Jet resources. |

I'm still thinking that for us normal humans without an MSEE and an $8-10K induction budget, this is the best bet (I'll hafta try to get em as clean as JP's):

Mike Cooley (from washington State) was at the West Coast Wramble with his newly installed Autronic in his 74 2.0L 914...he was still sorting it out, but it seemed to work well.
|
Chris, when did you get the 6?

It won't be in the car until business cash flow picks up again, hopefully no more than a few months delay (January). I found out that my current 2.4/four bumps me out of the class I wanted to be in with POC, and I wanted a six eventually anyway. For class and cost reasons I have to stick to a carbed 2.0-2.2 engine max; can't move too far from stock -6 specs. Later on, obviously I can swap to a 3.0-3.6 if desired, with basically just a flywheel change (and a bunch more money). |
Jake,
I was harsh on them. I worked in the computer industry for the last 5 years. I expect the interface software to be easier to use. The Autronic is easy to manipulate, but compared to the TECII and TECIII software.. they have a way's to go. We have the self learn software feature with the current setup in my desk drawer. B |
PB,
I agree about the injection systems not creating gobs of new power and torque on a stock engine.. but NO advantage ?? I consider a GM map sensor from PepBoys on Sunday evening at 7pm (for 38$) a significant advantage over paying 400-500$ for a pressure sensor. One day. B |
Anyone ever heard of Accell DFI??
Hello,
Has anyone ever heard of this brand of DFI...It has all the smae options as the other systems such as autronic and haltech but costs about $800.00 for their Gen 6 System(Gen 7 is the Newest Onbe just released)... I found someone who is willing to sell their system with all the sensors inlcuded for a reasonable price and I am thinking this would be a good system to start with and if it does not do everything I need it to well then I could always upgrade later... Question: HAs anyone ever heard of Accell DFI Gen 6?? Thanks, ROn |
Um yeah.
I know the guy who designed the system for them (John Meaney) he was with Accel and Fel-Pro hired him away to make the FP system. I didnt know that Accel had a 4cyl version. They mostly did V8 stuff. You need to get the version off of the computer and find out about the interface software. B |

I also wonder about resale value. Would you want some kludged-on aftermarket system on a car you were looking at? Who is going to help you when it doesn't work? Don't answer - I know what YOU would do, I talking about your typical 914 owner... |
I hear you PB (damn you..lol)
Spent 2 hours on the dyno today tuning a Holley system on a hot rod V8 911. It tuned quickly and easily. B |
what kind of power did the V8 power put down???
that car is going to be too fast if there is such a thing :) |
