First Type IV Experience
Many of you have read the recent post form Tom Perso talking about his 2270 Type IV motor in his 63 Beetle. I drove over yesterday and got a ride in it. Wow! I've built and driven hi performance Type I motors, but I had never experienced that kind of troque in an aircooled motor. The best part was that Tom was gracious enough to toss me the keys and let me drive it. We had Tom, my 18 year old son and myself in the car and I took off from a light and just feathered in the throttle and it broke loose and just started smoking, what a kick in the pants. It was very simular to my 2086 motor in my Ghia, accept that it not only snapped your neck thru the gears but it held you back in the seat and just kept on pulling. After we drove it, Tom came over to my house to look at my almost complete 914. (topic filler) I am definately not going to leave my 2.0 stock. I will probably take it to a 2270 or a 2176. I have to have that torque in my 914. Thanks for the thrill Tom!

Randy,
Not a problem, it was my pleasure... I am glad to have the car running and I am more than happy to share the results with people! It was a good time, the weather was nice and we did end up getting the tires a bit hot and sticky... While Randy was driving, he went around a corner dropped it into 3rd and accellerated out of the corner. We were around 1000rpm and it pulled away without a problem. Not bad for 3 people in the car, a cold day and some really tempermental Webers. It's fast, very streetable, and very easy to drive. What else do you want? I just need a better car to put it in... Right Randy? Perhaps, a 914??? Later, Tom |
The 914 can be arranged!!!!
